HOLY CARP!!!
Boy, this article reminded me of an interview with a British defense expert (from Jane's maybe) back when it was announced that Canada was buying the used Brit subs, rather than smaller new subs from the US. He practically chortled that Canada had been swindled, and said that the Brits had been paid a princely sum for equipment that was good only for the scrap yard. Caveat emptor.

"I'm appalled we've done a dumb deal with an ally like this," Hancock said. "If this was the Americans, we'd say good luck and serves you right."

That's the kind of d!ckheadedness that allowed the deal to go through.
Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool.

I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss!

A self deprecating anectode about Canadian nationhood that was passed around in the 70's went something like this:

At the end of WWI Canada could have had the best of three worlds;
British governance, French culture and, American technology.

For some reason thougn Canadians chose instead French governance, British technology and, American culture.

:lol:

At least as a Brit I can see that this isn't a good thing. The other two countries mentioned are probably shrugging and saying 'so?'
What do you mean "we", have you got a mouse in your pocket?

That's very funny.

It reminds me of the....

In heaven the engineers are German, the cooks are French, the lovers are Italian, the police are British and it's all run by the Swiss.

In hell, the engineers are French, the cooks are British, the lovers are Swiss, the police are German and it's all run by the Italians.

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.
