An interesting, dispassionate review of what the procedure entails.

I've had the procedure done to verify that a baby was still alive. This was done several years ago, and at that time it produced a much clearer image than regular ultra-sound could.

HOLY CARP!!!
I've heard many parents love to get US pics of junior during the first trimester but insurance companies won't pay for one that early.

This new legislation is a great way to get one for free, see the pic, and change your mind about getting the abortion.

I wonder how new the tech is? We lost two babies at 20 and 23 weeks and on the second one they tried to inject red blood cells into the umbilical cord but it was too hard for them to do and the baby was still born the next day. They used a regular old ultrasound on that attempt. Wondering if they might have been more successful hitting the cord w/the needle if they'd had this?

Anyways, the cartoons are mildly humorous and I do not support the unwanted intrusion into a woman's body even in the name of abortion prevention.

Thank you, Mark. But, while I might have had one or two sons if they had not died, I then would never have been blessed by my two little girls (now just turned 14 - ack!).

What an awful story.

If only Rick Perry wasn't such a cretinous knobhead, he'd get to see the consequences of his bad choices, too.

But what good is the view of someone who has never had to make your terrible choice?

There must be a phrase for this old canard. Oh, maybe it's "old canard".

What good is a law that adds only pain and difficulty to perhaps the most painful and difficult decision a woman can make?

I'm sure the majority of women wouldn't support this law. Most would probably avoid it if they could - that after all is the normal human predisposition - to avoid pain and difficulty. However, I would suggest that a law like that would give women a sense that they went "above and beyond" and it may help them later to know that they did so, when it came to the awful decision to end a life. In the author's specific case, she now sees herself as a victim, which might help her avoid the guilt that multitudes of women feel following an abortion.

Shouldn’t women have a right to protect themselves from strangers’ opinions on their most personal matters?

I bet you a bright person could come up with several analgous situations where society in general thinks that women, and men, have no such right.

Shouldn’t we have the right not to know?

We are fortunate that no one has pushed a law (yet) requiring the mother to view the remains of the destroyed child's body following the procedure. I notice the method of the abortion was not discussed by the author. Pretty nasty if they did a dilation and evacuation on a 20-month fetus. To me that is just barbaric. However, I suspect this is what was done. They probably can't induce labor and run the risk of a living child coming out - then they have to take life saving action I bet.

My wife was fortunate, in both her instances they just induced labor of the still born babies. Speaking of the "right not to know", we both declined the opportunity to view either of the boys' dead bodies afterward. For myself, I did not want to be haunted by the image of a perfect little, lifeless body.

Anyway, seems so odd that my wife and I were in there fighting for these little guys' lives, when probably blocks away other people were having viable, healthy babies shredded in utero.

A friend I know delivered full term still born twins (boys I think). To help her thru the grieving process they made foot prints and even took pictures of her holding them up for the camera. Seemed a bit ghoulish to me, and I'll never forget her shell-shocked expression. She had no idea - they were both fine a few days before and then after she went into labor, both dead.

But, back to the Texas law. Sounds like it has a reasonable goal, might have proper safeguards, but was very poorly implemented, leaving med providers unsure about how to proceed without fear of repercussion.

It does not, unless you consider "making a difficult decision even more difficult" or pandering to ideologues in an election year a "reasonable goal."

No more fortunate than not having juries, judges, prosecutors who convict a criminal to death roll, and governors who refuse to pardon, to watch the dead bodies of those they put to death. No more fortunate than not having snipers and bombers and their commanders to view the remains of those they (commanded) shot or bombed.

I'm surprised Ax, that you would support knowing less over knowing more.
