Daughter and I are off to Portland OR this weekend to visit Lewis & Clark on Monday. She's pretty serious about this one, so we'll see what she thinks after the visit.

Just curious - are college visits these days organized affairs, with some sort of tour etc by the administration staff, or do you have to go out of your way to schedule a meeting with a professor or two, or do you just go on your own and wander a bit?

I'm curious how much that has evolved in the last 25 years.

In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

So far, seems like they're pretty organized. L&C actually has a web app that you use to sign up for a visit on a certain date, what type of classes you're interested in sitting in on, etc.

I didn't even visit one college when I was in HS. I don't even remember considering what the college would be like. I just picked from my acceptance letters based on cost and my perception of the schools reputation.

Having been on several preschool tours, I would have been surprised if they weren't more professional and organized about it at the Uni level than they were in my college days.

In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

Have fun, Dan, and hang on to your wallet! Those college costs are not getting any cheaper. Just ask PianoDad.

We did a bit of each of these approaches. At one place, we met with department heads, deans, you name it, as well as taking the organized tour. At others we largely just wandered around. At most places, the admissions office meets you and gives you a thorough tour of the facility after indoctrinating you with their promo video. Scheduling meetings with faculty members is usually on your own. But this is all at the preliminary phase. Once you're accepted, then comes the full court press. Accepted Student Day is a common recruiting tool at many schools. At this event, which often lasts a weekend, you can do all sorts of things ... go to classes, meet with department and program heads, hear lots of speakers and attend lots of campus events.

Monica Lewinsky's alma mater!

When traffic is bad on Taylor's Ferry Road I drive by there all the time, then cut thru the rich Dunthorpe 'hood on my way to the Sellwood Bridge. I have found that the speed bumps (the large kind designed to slow you to a certain speed) can be taken perfectly at about 35 mph, giving my car a nice little "launch" and landing with the weight pretty well distributed on all four wheels.

The scenery through there looks pretty nice. I'm sure she'll like it.

Nothing wrong with following in her footsteps.

The knees, however...

Since this is my little baby girl we're talking about please don't offer those mental images up for my consideration!

Thank you.

Yes, Dan, I agree, and my daughter is still a junior in high school.

I know Jon meant nothing by his post. Still gave me a bad turn however.

I know for me the whole protective parent thing went through the roof when my girl hit her teens. I do a good job controlling it and not being over-bearing, but it is certainly still ever present.

Indeed I didn't.

Nevertheless, I get it. Sorry for the bad image - you can unthink it now. :)

It's OK. That's part of our job as parents.

And I know Jon really didn't mean anything with his post either.

You're both good dads. :)

If I happen to take that route on Monday, I'll drive slow for a change.
