Short work week gents?

I can't believe it's Friday already.

Buddy also sits on my printer. Why do cats do that? He also bites the printer door and pulls out paper and rips it.

Must be the vibration when he hits the scan button.

Does anybody know the etymology of the word "copycat"? I wonder where the name stems from.

Yup! He's currently watching my fingers as I type this, too.

Not sure! Leo loves to sit on anything new, too. If I come over for a night and put my bag down, he comes over and sits on it. When I took a shower the other day, I turn off the water to get out and there he is sitting on my towel. He just loves being around people, it's funny how attached he is.

Klaus: I was wondering the same.
I have no idea.
There's a book that tracks down the history of statements like this, but I can't remember the title right now, or I'd go see if they have a web version.

AHD, my friend! It's what I like to use.

Presumably it refers to cat behavior, specifically how kittens imitate the behavior of their mothers when learning to hunt.

The cool thing is that one of the earliest examples of using the term in formal writing is Sarah Orne Jewett's The Country of the Pointed Firs. I like Jewett; a little too "nature is cute and cuddly" at times but she was very good.

In Australia, folks sometimes hear the term first from this school rhyme:

Copycat from Ballarat,
Went to school and got the strap.
Teacher said it wasn't fair,
Because he lost his underwear!
I cite irreconcilable differences.

Buddy also enjoys clothes sitting, towel sitting, bag sitting, paper sitting, and pillow sitting. We have caught him towel sitting inside the dryer and one of his favorites is running socks sitting.

Wiktionary says about copycat:

Quote:

From copy + cat (“person”). It has been in use since at least 1896, in Sarah Orne Jewett's The Country of the Pointed Firs.

Does "cat" really mean "person", too?

Yeah, sometimes it does. Old school slang, though.

Klaus:
Yes, "cat" can refer to a person.
In the case of a "copycat" it definitely can, but even alone, "cat" is often used in the jazz world as a slang term for a person.

"The Johnny really can dance on the keys, he's a pretty cool cat."

"Oh, I know Reggie - that cat owes me $20."
"I realize you want him to touch you all over and give you babies, but his handling of the PR side really did screw the pooch." - Ivory Thumper

Cute pussy 89th.
I think they like to sit on something warm. Ours, despite a huge granite kitchen island, will always plunk down on the paper or magazine we're reading.

They like to sit on something owned by a person they like or want attention from. Our cats go crazy for daughter's backpack and hubby's clothes.
