Car Parts?

Mrs. George's 2003 Subaru Outback (LL Bean Edition) is a bit the worse for wear (she's rough on cars). The seatbelt retractors never worked properly, and on more than one occasion, she tried to shut the driver's (and passenger's) door with the buckle in the way. So, the panel at the bottom of the door has cracked.

I've looked (in vain) online for replacement parts (that should be a relatively easy install, right?).

Can anyone make a suggestion where to go?

I'm thinking a local body shop might have some insights.

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

If that doesn't work, try the local chop shop.

Well, that would be nice, if I were hungry. What if I want car parts?

Once it arrives you can ask these guys how to install it.

(They'll also be able to offer advice on where to obtain one)

Wrecking yards operate a "hot line" they use to find particular parts - or at least they did back in the day. Maybe call one and see if they'll find the part for you.

I'd be willing to bet that Subaru wants $200 for it.

Duct tape comes in many attractive colors. It is a 9 year old car that has lived in Chicago salt winters. Are you sure you want to invest in cosmetics?

They still do, but they use these new-fangled computers and teh interwebs for that.

The cheapest route (which ain't worth George's time) is to go to a U-pull it junkyard and take off the parts yourself.

Well, the car runs fine, and I'm worried about the longevity of the Jeep (1999). Daughter #2 is driving it now, and the Mrs. is getting a hankerin' for new wheels. I'm thinking of handing down the Sube to her and selling the Jeep. Daughter #2's friend could probably do the pull and install of the door panels, as well as replacing the seatbelt retractor mechanisms.

Duct tape should ALWAYS be gray.

If you're gonna use it... be proud of it. Gray.

People should know you use it. Don't hide it. :sombrero:

Duct tape should be gay gray, as agreed upon. :D

George, we had exactly the same problem with our VW Sharan which now at 15 years old is about to go to the scrapyard. Once a week we'd get a new dent somewhere in the door panels. Kids even managed to slam the doors so hard that the buckle made a couple of holes in the panels!
Annoying, but if you aren't going to pay to get the retractors mended you don't mend the panels either, and eventually you get to the stage when you start looking at other cars.
Still a car from 2003 probably has a good few years of service left if maintained.

I take it you do low yearly mileage on smooth roads...
If it were mine it would have done 300,000 and been over umpteen London sleeping policemen & potholes
