I have a ring that I want to get rid of. It's a wedding ring from, oh, about 38 years ago, and it's 18K gold.

Where's the best place to unload it?

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

I would try a few local jewelers. Some buy "estate" (read: used) jewelry and might be interested since it's not a plain band.

And a lot of them are buying gold for scrap. Prices are still quite attractive and it's a good time to cash in.

I would just go to a reputable jeweller, or even a few and get quotes. Should be pretty straightforward, with a ring like that. Everybody wants gold. Avoid the 'gold for cash' crowd.

That's assuming you don't mind it being melted down.

I took a bunch of old gold to a reputable Independent Jewelry
store. I wouldn't trust a big name store.
I got more than I thought I would. Even some silver dollers I had, he was honest enough to check a list to see if they were colectable or just worth the silver content. Which is what they were. About $18.00.

Does the fact that it's engraved change anything?

Would I be better off on eBay?

If the maker of the ring is someone collectable, then perhaps. I suspect that it'll be mostly about the weight of the piece though.

George -

I have done both - sold a wedding band at a jewelry store, and at another time sold some gold earrings and such at a Cash for Gold.

The Cash for Gold is an organization that goes to different hotels. A person weighs the gold and offers you cash. You will give them ID, so that they know it isn't stolen jewelry. I saw on a news segment about that one should only sell to a place that asks for ID.

That is pretty good you kept your wedding band that long. I was quick to unload mine and enjoyed a nice meal with the money I got from it.

It's a nice ring George, but the worth is in its gold.
I've been down this road.
I'd just get a little baggie, look around the house for other unwanted 10k, 14k, 18k, 22k pieces, wait til the price of gold is to your pleasing, then cash in.

I assume it is not your wedding ring, then?

If you want to sell it on ebay, take a better photo of it :lol2:

(Actually, taking a good photo of a ring is highly non-trivial)
