Brenda, Any hypothesis on why the turn out in Minesooooota's GOP Presidential caucus is so low this time around? Is that because the whether is too hot? Any hypothesis why Santorum beat Romney by 18 percentage points in the Minesooooota caucus? |

Low turnout has been a much-discussed problem for the GOP this whole primary season. |

Not sure why turnout was not higher. It was higher than I've seen in other years, but still not as high as I expected. I think it could be because many people are still undecided. With four candidates still, things are pretty fluid. People are still listening and deciding. As it winnows down to just three and then two, people will have an easier time deciding. This same decision-making phenomenon is found in marketing and selling all the time. When faced with too many choices, consumers will sometimes opt not to purchase, at least for a while, until they are more certain of their selection. With fewer choices, consumers are more apt to make a decision right away. The weather here is hardly 'too hot', Ax. Santorum spent a great deal of time here recently, while Romney did not, and Santorum's numbers are bound to reflect that. In my area, Romney and Santorum were about even, with Romney slightly ahead at my local caucus. |

Not in my region. We are more mainstream here. Every state has regional pockets of extremes, both right and left. The candidates from those regions do not represent the entire state, unless there is a total fluke thing like Jesse Ventura. His campaign relied on 18-24 year olds voting him into office. There are parallels there to more recent elections, but I'll leave those dots for others to connect. |

More input on the GOP caucuses: The media today reports many Minnesooota GOP caucus sites had their highest turnouts ever, with very enthusiastic participation. Not sure why some are saying it was low, when the media here says otherwise. Meanwhile, the Democrats had not only low turnouts, which is to be expected since they are not selecting a presidential candidate, but they had even lower turnouts than they anticipated. Not sure if that means anything or not. It also seems some of Santorum's success here had to do with voters getting weary of the negativity between Gingrich and Romney. People are tired of that and appreciate Santorum's positive approach, enough to select him in the straw poll. |

Could be like Oregon, where one County wags the entire State. But then again, we never elected Rowdy Roddy Piper, our local favorite son, either.

Looks like it was quite variable across the state, as some locations saw increased attendance, too. I guess I should be glad we had a decent turnout then. What I noticed at our location was that there were very few Paul supporters. Last time he ran, we had a huge number attend, but only three this time. Not sure why that was the case at our location, when his numbers were good elsewhere. |

Maine's turn-out was only 6000. Article: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/11/maine-caucus-results-2012_n_1270519.html May be it was too hot in Maine too.
