I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

The Constitution just says the feds won't establish a religion.

It doesn't say they won't destroy one.

The problem with the feds getting involved with this is that the pendulum always swings both ways.

Then it just escalates.
The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

What I want to know is why the Catholic Church supported Obamacare. Surely they saw this in the bill, didn't they?

http://www.lifesitenews.com/news/archive/ldn/2009/jul/09072905

Quote:

Three major Catholic organizations have issued a video and an action alert urging constituents to tell their legislators to immediately enact health care legislation, despite the vast abortion expansion embedded in the bills currently under consideration.

"Please call and e-mail your Representative in the next 24 hours expressing your support for Congress to enact health care reform now," the groups urge in an alert released last week. The page hosted by St. Vincent De Paul offers contact information and email forms for congressional offices.

But seriously, the church is exempted.
It is? If so, why are the bishops all upset?

Oh, I see the distinction you're making.

But a question, then (and I gotta run to work in about 3 minutes): If, lets say, I worked as a secretary for the Archdiocese of Chicago as a secretary, would my employer be required to cover the morning after pill?

That's the trade-off. Government can't and shouldn't give funding to a church or other religious institution; that would be a First Amendment violation. But if a church creates a separate nonprofit corporation which has some other purpose than worshipping and promoting the faith, it is eligible for federal funding. But with that separating of function and legal structure from the church, it becomes an organization just like any similar secular one, regardless of how many clergy may be appointed its trustees or directors; and the organization must comply with the same federal stipulations for receiving the money as anyone else. You can't set up a separate corporation to be "not the church" so you can get the money, but then claim you *are* the church to avoid its stipulations. And that is the same whether it's Sacred Heart, Riverside Methodist, or Prebyterian Memorial Hospital.

Religiously affiliated hospitals have been the cornerstone of our healthcare system from day one. The problem is we let the federal government in to begin with. Nice little hospital you got there. Too bad if something happened to it.

This is government thuggery.

Quote:

About 58% of American Catholics "believe that employers should be required to provide their employees with health care plans that cover contraception," the survey showed. That was higher than the percentage of white mainline Protestants (50%) and white evangelicals (38%) who believe that. The Catholic Church officially forbids contraception use, but 98% of Catholic women who have been sexually active have used birth control. The survey comes as Catholic bishops and their supporters are protesting a decision last month by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Great, when the Catholic Church becomes a democracy that might mean something.

There is a line we cross when we go from "I will believe it when I see it" to "I will see it when I believe it".

The USA is a democracy, so regardless of how many churches that aren't, it means something right here in the USA.

And the USA isn't a Democracy...

I would accept Constitutional Republic or Representative Republic.
