If battery manufacturers awarded incentives to produce batteries the Volt may use are included in the analysis, the potential government subsidy per Volt increases to $256,824. For example, A123 Systems has received extensive state and federal support, and bid to be a supplier to the Volt, but the deal instead went to Compact Power. The $256,824 figure includes adding up the subsidies to both companies.

The $3 billion total subsidy figure includes $690.4 million offered by the state of Michigan and $2.3 billion in federal money. That’s enough to purchase 75,222 Volts with a sticker price of $39,828.

I'm sure the gov't is dumping millions billions into battery technology too. Not really a waste IF it eventually causes a shift in transportation that is ultimately a benefit to society. But that's a big IF. And, it still seems to me that the power grid is pretty maxed out so should there be a shift to electric cars in the future, no one really has an answer for where that "clean" electricity is going to come from.

A bigger problem...the Leaf, the Volt, etc., all require electricity from the grid, at some point.

Obama is closing over 60 coal plants, enough generating capacity for around 1/10 of the country. Can't have dirty coal, ya know.

So where is the electricity for the grid gonna come from?
