Holy Carp!!! Ben Kingsley will be in it!

Harrison Ford is on - he'll play Graff.

Harrison Ford is ready to take on another alien race, as he has officially joined the cast of OddLot Entertainment's sci-fi adventure tentpole "Ender's Game" along with fellow Oscar nominees Abigail Breslin and Hailee Steinfeld.
Also onboard are young thesps Aramis Knight, Moises Arias, Jimmy "Jax" Pinchak, Suraj Parthasarathy, Conor Carroll and Khylin Rhambo.

Gavin Hood ("X-Men Origins: Wolverine") is directing from his own script, which is adapted from Orson Scott Card's award-winning novel. Summit Entertainment is co-financing and will release the film in the U.S. on March 15, 2013.

Set in Earth's utopian future, "Ender's Game" stars Asa Butterfield ("Hugo") as the title character, a genius strategist who's recruited by the government to help destroy an insect-like alien race.

Ford will play Colonel Hyram Graff, who's in charge of training the young male recruits at an elite military academy. Breslin will play Valentine Wiggin, Ender's older sister, while Steinfeld will play Petra Arkanian, Ender's ally and trusted right hand.

Knight, who previously appeared in Hood's "Rendition," will play Bean, the smallest new recruit; Arias ("Hannah Montana") will play Bonzo, the commander of Salamander Army; Pinchak ("Let Me In") will play Peter Wiggin, Ender's brilliant but tortured older brother; and Parthasarathy will play Alai, the first recruit to befriend Ender.

Carroll ("Away We Go") will play Bernard, the leader of the new recruits who bullies Ender at first; and Rhambo will play Dink, a brainy member of Rat Army.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

I thought Jackson's Trilogy was three parts brilliance and one part garbage. I fear the same mix for the Hobbit. I realize this is just my opinion, but I'm not afraid of expressing it. :tiki:

Teaming up with Alan Lee and John Howe was brilliant. The look they gave to this movie was exactly on target, IMO. The attention Jackson paid to the details was impressive and it paid off in many ways. The world really did suck you in, just like in the books. And the one part garbage? I'm sure I'll get blowback for this, but Jackson is just too much the little boy for my tastes. He did not need to dwell ad nauseam on hacking and slashing at the expense of more plot detail and character development. And his over the top exaggerations (Oliphaunts as big as apartment buildings ... c'mon) were too much of a sop to the low end of the thirteen year old boy demographic.

For the most part, I didn't object to the plot changes. Adding more scenes for Galadriel and Arwen made good sense cinematically. But killing off Saruman AND Denethor in falls/leaps, oh please. Again, that was Jackson pandering to little boys who want to exclaim, "ooooh, yuck."

Lastly, all the excess CGI warring forced him to make too many plot compromises. Leaving out the scouring of the Shire changed the ending in important ways. I think it diminished the final product.

I'm guessing that the Hobbit will have all these strengths, and all of these (IMO) flaws.
I suspect it would be impossible to avoid making this kind of compromise and still get the funding he would have needed to make the movies. The movie industry is primarily an industry, after all. Art is nice, but dollars are essential.

The LOTR movies were an awful lot better than I feared they'd be. Not quite as good as I'd hoped, maybe, but pretty close. They could have been a lot worse.
I agree with both you guys.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

Not having been a fan of LOTR, I approached the films as something to be enjoyed on their own. I knew nothing of the characters (though I'd heard the names Bilbo and Frodo).

Thoroughly enjoyed them, particularly because I had no expectations, and I didn't have the baggage of those expectations weighing the experience down.

So, you wanna talk Ender's Game? Hmmm?

Right now I'm reading through a LOT of stuff that Tolkien pulled from for his own material. It's a real trip.

Are they making an Ender's Game, George? Wouldn't be surprised if they did.

I just bought Enders Game. What about the other three books in the series?

Ender's Game is the original story, and it has 3 sequels.

Ender's Shadow is a story set contemporaneously with Ender's Game, told from the viewpoint of one of the characters in Ender's Game.

All of them are good.

Daughter likes the other three even more than Enders, but says they are also a very different type of sci-fi. There, you have an expert teenage opinion. :lol2:

All that does is prove P*D's point about choosing to compromise in the hopes of raking in more ticket sales. I really enjoyed that trilogy but it's obvious that was their aim, rather than to bring to the silver screen the full story of Tolkien's legendarium.
