I'm well aware of your sig line - I was a phil. major after all.
I disagree with that notion.

I agree mostly with it though - there isn't an "only" way - but that doesn't preclude a "right" way - even if the "right" way is unknowable to us most of the time (if not all the time).

That's a separate issue though - what I asked is why people have a visceral reaction to blunt statements of fact.
It's a much broader question with a wider scope than "people vary."
It's a question about people's need to emote, vs. a desire to rationally solve/progress. Two different ways of approaching life's less-than-ideal moments, and we all handle it very differently.
I'm curious as to why we, as humans, do that.

Since we're just a chance allocation of atoms with no real uniqueness or specialness in the Universe, I wonder why we're so aware of these lofty concepts which elude all other species?

Why are people so afraid of saying someone has died?

I may prefer to say it more gently, "so and so passed on" etc. - but not because the other is wrong.

I say that more than "passed away". I just think "Pushing up daisies" is funny.
And how are you today?

*sigh*

I wonder if you'll ever realize that not ever being open to an objective absolute is in itself an absolute.
In the same way that choosing not to decide is still making a choice (props to whomever gets that one).

Of course people vary - I was hoping to entertain a more interesting discussion, requiring more thought than the obvious nature of humanity - namely that we're all uniquely the same.

Why are people is that guy so afraid of saying someone has died?

I believe that should be singular.

Most people here seem to have lots of fun talking about it.
The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

'E's not pinin'! 'E's passed on! This parrot is no more! He has ceased to be! 'E's expired and gone to meet 'is maker! 'E's a stiff! Bereft of life, 'e rests in peace! If you hadn't nailed 'im to the perch 'e'd be pushing up the daisies! 'Is metabolic processes are now 'istory! 'E's off the twig! 'E's kicked the bucket, 'e's shuffled off 'is mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisible!! THIS IS AN EX-PARROT!!
Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool.

I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss!

I can see the outline of Lake Michigan in that toast.

I almost used it here earlier today. Can't remember where.

People don't really vary all that much IMO. There is more in common than different.

Oh, Brenda, I like to learn how to do most anything. It's all interesting. If we get up to Minnesooota you will have to show me.

Darn right I will! I'll have you hooked in no time flat. :sombrero:

I'll even help you create your own design. Hubby is wanting a rug for the new office. He's talking of an antique world map type of design, with sea creatures and all. Should be a great project!

Say, how's the kitchen?
We're electrified and watered up! I can actually start moving into the kitchen NOW!! The plumber hooked up the sinks, faucets, and dishwashers TODAY.

If you promise not to tell anyone else here, I'm hoping to post pics tomorrow. Keep it under your hat for now though. Shhhhhhh .....

Still got details to finish in the kitchen: tile, toekicks, drawer fronts, dishwasher fronts, some lower doors, hook up the water filtration, spacers by some lower cabinets, window trims .... That can get done as I get the gear moved into the space. I need to prep the new fridge yet, too. Get all the packing material out of it and wipe'er down.

Can't move the Hobart in until the spacers and tile are done.

Died. Not passed away, not passed on, not any other fluffery. Death is part of life, and even for those of faith, the next life does not begin until after this one ends. It is not a bad word. It's the healthiest word to use to describe what's happened.

Actually nahh, I see your point. I just don't consider "passed away" the dirty phrase it seems to have gained the rep for.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

"He passed."

What the hell?

He freaking DIED. That's what he did. "Passed" is what I did to the corn that I ate yesterday.

I don't see it as a dirty phrase, I just see it as an "enabling" phrase, which helps to permit people with coming to terms with the reality of the situation. As I think about it, I suppose I don't have much trouble with it later on, after someone has truly come to terms with the reality of the death and readjusted their lives accordingly. Using it in the moment can facilitate denial and escapism.

No, that's 'shat'.

I mean, as long as we're eschewing euphemisms and all.

No, it's 'passed,' as in....

Did you hear about the cannibal that passed his brother the other day? :lol2:

When you say 'shat', you mean this.

I don't think how anyone expresses it matters. We all know what it means.

We have doctors on the forum, and you want to now talk of 'expressing' things? From frypan to fire we go.
