So and So "Is Dead"

I hate it when a news reporter states that "Such and such person Is Dead."

It seems so tactless to me. They should say the person "Has passed away" instead, unless it's some dirtbag like Kim Jong Il.

Hmmm,

Mr. Mainer, how come when I see one of your posts I get this gut feel that you're just looking for some cheap copy? I admit that I'm not a regular poster and that I could be mistaken about this. If I am I apologize. But - do you participate in threads that you didn't start? Inquiring minds want to know...

'He's popped his clogs' is my favourite euphemism. Perhaps it would not have been entirely appropriate in the case of the Kennedy assassination.
What do you mean "we", have you got a mouse in your pocket?

Mr. Cronkite, the authority.

"President Kennedy died."

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

Why are people so afraid of saying someone has died?

I may prefer to say it more gently, "so and so passed on" etc. - but not because the other is wrong.

Why are people so afraid of saying someone has died?
People are in denial about death.
They don't want to talk or think about it any more than necessary.
The mention of it reminds us that OUR days are numbered, not the happiest topic.

I think many people consider it more polite to avoid the blunt mention of death.
They use terms that are more oblique and almost soothing like passed away, or laid to rest.

I understand using those terms. They're especially appropriate in religious use where one is trying to communicate not the end of their life, but the rest and peace of their soul - so I get the usage of other terms, I just don't get why "so and so died" would ever be considered the "wrong" way to speak about death.
