Good for him.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

After the crap Romney has started dishing his way, this is a real turn-the-other-cheek moment for Newt. Good on him.

I wonder if any democrat candidate will sign him up.
The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

He was only fired because he failed to say, "Not that there's anything wrong with that" afterward.

As far as I'm concerned the aide called it as it is.

Mormonism was conceieved as a cult and remains to this day a cult.

I'd consider it more of an ex-cult, but then that's true about all of the Abrahamic religions (except the sub-groups that are still cults, like the Hassidim, branch davidians, etc.)

Having said that, I'd be the first to admit the definition is fluid and imprecise.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

It's an alien based cult as far as I'm concerned. Just Google the term *planet kolob*.

No different than that contemporary cult founded by L. Ron Hubbard.

Give em 2000 years.

ALL religions were made up and agreed with - not that there's anything wrong with that.

Less agreement = cult

Except that it didn't start out as a bar bet with the editor of Astounding Science Fiction (Analog) magazine. :)

Kind of my point - they were all cults at first.

Like Hitch said - add religion to the list of things that are best not to see made (with laws and sausages).
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

I'll wager it didn't start over a pot of coffee and a pack of cigarettes either.

Agreed - Mormonism has acquired a patina of respectability from the simple passage of time. Same with Islam. Same with the cult of that wayward Jew Jesus that I follow.

Probably. Ol' Joe Smitty came down with a bad case of St. Anthony's Fire followed by acute lead poisoning.

Patina? I prefer to call it tarnish.

From the Des Moines Register: http://caucuses.desmoinesregister.com/2011/12/14/did-newt-gingrichs-ex-staffer-really-call-mormonism-is-a-cult/

The last paragraph -

Quote:

Did Newt Gingrich's ex-staffer really call Mormonism a cult?

An Iowa political operative pushed out of the Newt Gingrich campaign for remarks about Mitt Romney's religion didn’t say he thought the Mormon Church is a cult, the website that first published the remarks said today.

Craig Bergman, who had recently been hired as Gingrich's Iowa political director, left the campaign Tuesday. The controversy came over these comments he made in a focus group conducted by the IowaRepublican.com and McClatchy newspapers: "There is a national pastor who is very much on the anti-Mitt Romney bandwagon," Bergman said. "A lot of the evangelicals believe God would give us four more years of Obama just for the opportunity to expose the cult of Mormon. ...There's a thousand pastors ready to do that."

Campaign spokesman R.C. Hammond said in a press release Tuesday that Bergman's comment "is inconsistent with Newt 2012's pledge to run a positive and solutions orientated campaign."

In response, the website today posted an explanation of Bergman's comments in its focus group:

"TheIowaRepublican.com believes Bergman was not making a statement that reflected his own views of the Mormon religion, but was relaying what he heard from the "national pastor" referenced in his comment."

Meanwhile, a national religion writer raised questions about how Bergman managed to gain such a prominent position in Gingrich's campaign, if only for a day or two. Joanna Brooks writes about Mormon issues for Religion Dispatches. "Is it possible that Gingrich could have saved himself this embarrassment by vetting Bergman a little more closely?" she wrote today. "Bergman's track record as a political consultant in Iowa includes ties to the campaigns of Alan Keyes and a failed Tea Party rally for Sarah Palin last September. He also served as Iowa political director for Ron Paul in 2008 but was apparently not rehired."

The Des Moines Register tried to reach Bergman by phone and e-mail. A reporter went to the address his business' Facebook page lists as its office. The building at 210 Court Ave. doesn't appear to house the Robert Morris Group. Instead, it is the boarded-up home of the defunct Judge Roy Bean's Eatin' and Drinkin' Emporium.

One day maybe someone running for President will admit that he's not really religious, and pretty much thinks it's all a load of rubbish.

Oh hang on, that would be honesty.
