How serious is this baby issue?

HOLY CARP!!!
My brother in law and his wife had a baby two weeks ago.
The baby had been crying too much so they went to the doctor and were told the baby has been crying so much because she is underfed and has lost 11 oz.

She has gotten the formula amount that the hospital recommended but now is being told that the recommended amount is too low.
When they told the doctor the amount that was recommended he admitted that the hospital had given the same incorrect instruction to other mothers before, and he is going to correct them once again.

Don't ask me why they are not breastfeeding.
I don't know, and it's none of my business.

Then don't share it on the internet. None of our business either.

The question is will the baby suffer long term consequences by spending the first 2 weeks of life undernourished?

They are poor, poorly educated and have no Internet connection, hence my tendency to stick my nose into their business.

My guess is its unlikely to be a big deal, babies often lose weight after they are born, especially breast fed babies. 11oz or even a pound is not unusual.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

True enough; idle gossip does not degrade the social cohesiveness of TNCR society. :lol2:

Perhaps the formula gives the baby colic?

breast milk is good they say. it is not unusual to lose weight in the first week or so. that is a bit much.

just my opinion.. but in early infancy i believe it is best to offer food every hour or so.. at least.. totally a feed on demand schedule.. don't follow the rules.. follow the baby.
it behooves me to behold

Yes, the baby knows when it is hungry. Feed baby when baby is hungry. Life is better for everyone then. :)

Some weight loss is normal, though by now they're typically at or above their initial birth weight. (but hey, people vary :P ) Like Ren said, the formula itself could be a problem. This is common, and is one of the reasons there are so many types.

Since you don't mind being nosy, make sure they are signed up for WIC or some equivalent program so at least money wont be an excuse for making sure the baby doesn't have enough to eat.

oh and,

:yelling: CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR NEW NIECE UNCLE KENNY!!11
