New Restaurant in the Area

For the last 25 years, there's a storefront in town that's had fast food places in there. It started as "The Beef Depot" serving burgers and Italian beef sammiches. Then it became a strictly burger place, then it was a hot dog place, with two incarnations.

Suffice it to say that the restaurant business is a rough one.

So, the last owner/occupier of the place was a Mexican food place. I never ate there (Mrs. George doesn't like Mexican food), and, of course, they folded about 4 months ago.

The other day, as I was walking the dog, I saw activity in the place. I saw painters and drywall going up, and last week a new sign went up.

Here's their web site: http://www.empanadus.com/#!

Looks interesting.

Argie pierogies FTW! Does look interesting, if a little limited of menu.

Empanadas are the ultimate on-the-go food. It´s also what everybody makes (and by everybody, I mean the hard-working señoras) when there is any kind of festival or fundraiser. Sell them 1mil Guaraníes each (about 23 cents).

I make them with soymeat, green pepper, and onion. Work crushed black pepper into the dough. Hot sauce on top. So good, but fairly time-consuming.

The Caprese and the Spinach ones look reeeeeally good. Those are the two types that I get at my favorite café in Asunción.

Went to a place called "Beef Master" a few times. They served sandwiches primarily.

Italian beef is huge in Chicago. There are mom and pop beef, gyro and hot dog places EVERYWHERE.

I used to go to a place called Mr Gyro in Chicago. It was open until 4. Perfect drunk food.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

Sounds like a good plan. Keep the menu simple, do what you do best, and make it something that can be eaten in hand. Could be a winner.

There used to be a place in Oak Park called "Kings and Queens." Bunch of (of course) Greek guys makin' gyros and they were absolutely the best - with skin-on fries. The guy who was slicing the meat off the spit was missing the tips of two fingers. I could never eat there without wondering what happened to those tips. :hair:

Empanadas are good. A Columbian restaurant near me serves them. They're deep fried though.

Thats it. I used to live on Rush and Chicago, so it was a few blocks away. The neighborhood got sketchy there, this was before they razed Cabrini.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

From the reviews:

Food is good and lots of two for one deals but they mark up the prices so the 2 for 1s are only mediocre. Better fries than sammys down the street. But there are always bums and that crazy cat lady that always says she is going to "call officer tobias" that require this place to be atrictly carry out. I reccomend walking an extra block to sammys but you would never come here sober so my dog generally seems to enjoy the second gyro that he steals from the table after I pass out. Remove the transients so my racist dog doesnt get worked up before he eats and maybe he wont get diarrhea. Kthanx
