HOLY CARP!!!

OK, I need to run a particular web-based application that depends on Java. I verified Operating System requirement (in this case, Windows 7), I verified browser requirement (in this case, Internet Explorer 8). I also verified that I have "Java(TM) 6 update 29" installed. But certain things still don't work right, and tech support over the phone says I need to install "J2SE Runtime Environment." I downloaded the latest Release 6 JRE from Oracle's official Java site and that's what gave me "Java(TM) 6 Update 29." Doesn't that give me the Java Runtime Environment already? I haven't find any link on Oracle's site to let me download "J2SE Runtime Environment." So, uhm, stupid question ... What's the difference between "Java(TM) 6 update 29" and "J2SE Runtime Environment" ? What am I missing here? Thanks in advance. |

The Runtime Environment of J2SE is the J2RE. It would be quite strange if an application needs J2SE to run. But just in case you can download it here: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html |

Thanks, Klaus. Yes, I downloaded the JRE from that site (the one Klaus linked to). Specifically, I downloaded this particular item from that page: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jre-6u29-download-513650.html Once installed, it shows up in Windows 7 as "Java(TM) 6 Update 29." So I'm still scratching my head as to what I might be missing. Unless somehow "J2RE" is somehow different from "JRE," I am at a lost.

Maybe the problem is in the "web based application". |

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. Could be ... I had said "web based application" working in two other Windows machines. One is a Windows 7 32-bit with "J2SE Runtime Environment 5 update 22." One is a Windows Vista 32-bit with "Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6" and also "Java(TM) 6 update 29." Now I'm struggling with a Windows 7 64-bit with only "Java(TM) 6 update 29." Comparing the three, said web-based application has problem only in the newest Win7 64-bit machine ... tech support was very clear that Windows 32-bit vs. 64-bit is not an issue, that's why I'm chasing down this J2SE/JRE rabbit hole. It's certainly quite possible that the app. just breaks when used with more recent JRE releases, in which case I'll try installing an earlier JRE release and hope for the best.

Alright, finally figured out what's wrong ... I am running 64-bit Windows, so I installed 64-bit JRE. BUT the I have been using 32-bit Internet Explorer all along (because the task bar short cut launches the 32-bit version by default), and that requires a separate installation of 32-bit JRE. So I installed the 32-bit version of JRE and now everything works. (The web-based application has other dependency that makes it unworkable with 64-bit Internet Explorer anyway ... so I'll have to stick with 32-bit Internet Explorer for that application.) |

32-bit dll's with JNI maybe? I was going to say that but "tech support was very clear that Windows 32-bit vs. 64-bit is not an issue". Oh, no I guess not, it just wanted an RE that matched the IE. Edited by Copper, Dec 8 2011, 04:47 PM.
