7 boys, 1 girl.

Just an anecdote, I know, but already to see such a result is disheartening.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

Hmm, that's the same ratio as most secondary school classes in China...

Girls are in ballet and toddler chef class, I suppose.

I could see putting the boy in chef class, maybe this summer.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

I shake my head at such gaps. Girls can enjoy science and math as much as boys. Just give them the opportunity.

Daughter is now finishing college Calculus III in the first semester of her junior year of high school. Next semester that time block is for a class in metalworking, meeting one of her high school requirements. She has a broad range of interests.

just heard on the radio yesterday about how many more women were going into medicine up here; there will be more female than male doctors here real soon. So not to worry, lots of girl are getting into science, just maybe not at 2 1/2.

Glad to hear that. There's still quite a gap of girls in science here. Daughter likes that ratio though. :lol2:

but not a tutu? Now that's not very PC of you. I thought you were liberal?

Sometimes they have the parents dance with the kids, even for performances, Jon.
What color tutu would you prefer?

Blue. So they color coordinate with his shoes. :D

Careful with the comments - if you happen to be president of Harvard.

In STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) subjects, numbers as well as achievement levels are growing for female students, decreasing for male students, the majority of college graduates are female.

Cite? No. I read it somewhere online, must be true.

I thought about referencing Summers in the original post - one of his three proposed reasons for the dearth of women in STEM subjects was parents steering boys there but not girls. In fact I considered titling the post 'Maybe Larry Summers was Right' but then everyone would have assumed I was referring to his more controversial proposed reason about innate abilities, so I didn't mention him.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

I think in this case it is a function of age and the differing interests of very young children. At this age the girls mostly want to be dancing princesses not adventurers.

I try to tell myself not to read too much into it since its such a tiny sample, but I can't help thinking its parents steering boys there and not girls . The kids are 2, remember, they're not coming to mom and dad with class requests. 'Science class' is mostly about petting and feeding animals. 2 year old girls like that too.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

By the way, it was the mom of the one girl in class who pointed out that it was 7/1 boy girl. She was shaking her head, her conclusion was the same as mine.

I hadn't noticed, but I've only taken the boy there twice, since the day of his class is one of the days his sitter is here.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

Our daughter went to Science Discovery Camp every year by 4 or so. I think it's just the age.

It's a real issue here in the U.S. - not a lot of girls get into science.

Brenda's daughter is the exception, not the rule, and it should be encouraged.

I love biology. I like the idea of physics and chemistry, but I was never any good at them.

I was waiting to teach piano Tuesday afternoon, just sitting on the porch observing people. There's a YMCA across the street, and there must have been some kind of dance class at 3, as moms in minivans escorted their 6 - 7 yo (I'm guessing at the ages) girls in leotards inside. I had one of those "serious thought" moments: "Will that be my future? Driving a minivan, taking daughter to dance class at 3 and son to soccer at 4? Do I want that to be my future?"
And how are you today?

So ... jon, thinking about sending your boy to ballet class soon? ;)

I wonder if parents with kids in ballet classes shake their heads over the girl/boy ratio there, too.

I wonder if little boys ever ask to do ballet. some must, but how many of them are allowed to? How many parents refuse to let their sons do ballet?
And how are you today?
