We had a goldfish last over 10 years.

It must have been some kind of miracle.
I can't see this one living beyond our next vacation.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

Let me add that this is a constant theme -- well meaning outsiders introducing objects to your child you would rather they not have.

I always politely decline those Nerf guns. This year Aunt R2 showed up with a few at Thanksgiving (this was at my in-laws house). After she got hit in the face a few times with Nerf bullets, and we had a few close calls with some glass objects, I think she understood my feelings on the toys.

My issue now is that I am firmly against my boys having Internet in their bedrooms. With the cost of devices like the Kindle fire coming down, I have to be more vigilant about no one buying these for my sons. I only want them to have access to the Internet on our family computer.

As they say in Vietnam, a dog isn't just for Christmas. If you get a big one, it'll last well into the New Year.
Yep. One one of our Hanoi back street meanderings this summer, there was a whole skinned dog on a spit at a sidewalk eatery. Bout the size of an Australian Shepard. I wanted a pic, but the wife and daughter were not slowing or stopping, no way, no how.

You sure the grown-ups didn't swap it while you weren't looking?

Sorry guys...my reaction? It's just a goldfish, no big deal. The boy will enjoy having a pet and will learn responsibility with feeding it and will learn how to cope with life death once the goldfish goes belly up. Wait until your boy grows up and brings home something that actually craps on the floor (cat, dog, hooker) and you'll yearn for the goldfish years!

Yeah, hadn't thought about the boy's reaction when the fish dies. He's only 2 1/2, not sure what he'll make of it.
That concern underlines my first suggestion (above) to take the boy and the fish to a pond and let him "set the goldfish free."
At his age you can probably set the fish free in the toilet because it all goes to the river.

yeah well maybe that was my problem. didn't have that happy story to fall back on. my kid took the death of Goldfish Goldfish pretty hard. It was one of those fancy goldfish that were supposed to live longer.

Now that you are a parent you really should rethink this atheist thing.

Yeah, IMHO pets as gifts is wrong. :tsktsk:
Was at a boat club yesterday where they put a life size chess set in court yard with a sign stating that children left unattended at the chess set will be given caffeine and puppies.

Those are two of my favorite things. :D

I saw a sign like that in a children's area of a library once. I love it, gets the point across well, but with humour.

We've done the same here. The grandmas don't always think about these things. In fact, they hardly ever do. Stories, stories, stories ........

When I was very young, probably between ages 4 to 6, we spent a Christmas at Grandma's. I got a nerf ball. There was discussion about how it was soft so could be thrown in the house. Pretty soon one of Grandma's delicate figurines was on the floor in pieces. My fault. I felt terrible.

I think more than one Hummel figurine perished to my nerf toys.
