I'd love it if it was fairly applied, but I'd never trust that it was fairly applied. I think Dewey made some excellent points. |
| As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good? | |

Oh, man. I get easily annoyed with waitstaff. I was a server and a cook for a while, but damn! I can't stand it when the check is placed on the table and the server stands a few feet away, just waiting for you to sign. I'm paying to enjoy a night out, so just be patient! I can play the waiting game - I always wait for them to walk away before signing. |

How funny; I hate when they walk away after putting the bill down. Then I have to wait for them to return, which seems to take forever. When finished eating I almost always want to leave ASAP and I appreciate when waiters wait for me to sign so we can get it over with so I can be on my way I guess people vary.

If it is stealing then it is stealing only half the time. The other half, it's giving. I'm not defending the policy. I don't like it. But it is not 100% stealing; it's more like 50% stealing and 50% giving, a wash perhaps but I still don't like it. It's not the money; it's the idea. I do not want to overpay OR underpay and some customers may dine there only once so their purchases will not average out. Money is a special and sensitive thing and I expect transactions to be accurate. |

Haha - people do vary. I just don't like being rushed. I'll leave when I'm ready, which sometimes is when they bring the check, but not often. And it's even worse when they bring the check while you're still eating. If it's a shift change in staff, I understand, but that's not usually the case. |

most retail places here have penny jars/saucers etc. They'll scoop the 2 cents needed that you don't have, we drop in a few if given in change. Seems to work ok. |

ZOOOOOM!

It would be pretty ****ed up to outright stiff a waitress for following a policy she had no responsibility for establishing. As far as hovering goes, yeah that's just plain obnoxious. |

Actually I hate it when they bring the check without me asking for it. Bringing the check unrequested is to me the same as an order to leave asap. If I asked them to bring the check, however, then they should wait at the table until I paid. |

No - the waitstaff work their tails off for slave wages and usually crap benefits, and had nothing to do with the restaurant's change-making policy. |

It's like any job with direct customer interaction. The people with the least involvement in deciding policy are on the front line and have to deal with all the irritation caused by the morons who are in charge, who frequently have little or no direct customer contact, and, in my experience, little or no clue. Not that I'm bitter. |

Or if you return and order the same thing. You can systematically gain or lose with this practice if you consistently order the sme thing, which some people do at favorite restaurants that they frequent. |

We don't know if it is the server's policy or the restaurant's, do we? It could be an option for them to do so or not. The tip is for quality services received, not just because you sat down and they brought you food. Rounding up or down is a convenience to them that can cost me money. That is not good service. |

FWIW, When leaving I did speak to the manager, who repeated the policy. Again, I didn't argue because my SO is so sensitive about what he sees as making a scene. In fact the moment he saw me go for the manager he hightailed it out the door. We've been together 10 years now and keeping peace with the SO is a groovy thing; I certainly have my quirks too. |

I think this only works if half the food/drinks are priced at $.49 and under and half is $.50 and over. I like places where they bring me the bill but I pay at the door as I'm going out (although I worry about the impression that they get depending on how I do my tip). If I leave cash on the table but then zero out the tip on the credit card w/the cashier, she probably thinks I'm an a$$hole. If I put it on the credit card then the server clears the table and thinks I'm an a$$hole, and then the tip money may get shared rather than go right to that server. And the next time in if the waitress remembers me she spits in my soup. Edited by Kincaid, Dec 7 2011, 09:24 AM.

Yes, peace in the home is important. I will not hesitate to speak to a manager too, but more often than not it is to tell them if a server or the whole experience was exceptional. If I have a complaint and it was not such that the experience was ruined, I'll just tell them and refuse to take a discount or anything. There are a lot of people who complain just to get them. |

I see no problem with it IF it says they will be doing that on the menu, or they make it known thats their policy in some way so you know before you order. |

Yeah, include the taxes, and if you don't want to worry about making change make the prices a whole dollar value. Next time you visit take 100 pennies. Count out the correct number of pennies and pass them in with your payment. Tip the waiter as per normal.
