Are you okay if restaurants round your change to the nearest dollar?

HOLY CARP!!!
We went to a nice restaurant and paid the bill with cash.
When the waiter brought the change, which should have been, say, $8.43 they only brought eight dollars.

I politely told the waiter he forgot my change.
He told me for cash they round the change up or down to the nearest dollar.
He said the restaurant makes the same money and on average I pay the same money and it is less hassle for them and me.

I didn't like the idea, but I held back my annoyance out of courtesy to my SO who gets very embarrassed by what he perceives to be a conflict.
Have you seen this practice?

Are you okay if restaurants round your change to the nearest dollar?

Hell no. That's just sloppy laziness that will end up costing the server money in tips.

Another word for that is theft.

It may average out the same for them but for you it averages out to 43 cents stolen.

Never encountered that, but no, that's just stupid. I'll make the decision re what to do with the change.

Petty theft, but theft all the same. Kenny next time you go there tell the waiter that you have rounded their bill down to the nearest dollar, that it's less hassle for you and they make the same money at the end of the day.

See their reaction.

No.

If a restaurant wants to charge people in round dollar amounts, they can adjust their menu to only have prices in round dollar amounts, and inclusive of tax. Otherwise, they should charge what they say they're going to charge. Would I make a big deal out of it if they shorted my pocket change? No - but I wouldn't go back.

Yes. Always round the bill down and the change up and we have a deal. In other words, if you want a convenience, YOU pay for it. Otherwise I'd like my money please.

They don't just round up or round when it is their favor.
They say they round to the nearest dollar, which could be up or down.

The more I think about this the more annoyed I get. :veryangry:

I would go back there and demand your .43.

Take your SO with you and teach him to not let others take advantage of him.

And never return to that place.

And let them know that you will not be returning.

Vote with your dollar man! It's the capitalist way!

I was going to ask...I wonder how often they round up when the bill is, say, $8.51. I'm going to guess not as often as they should.

I'd probably say nothing and just take 43 cents out of the tip.

Or maybe just do the same thing in return - only hand over $15.00 for a $17.25 tab, saying you always round to the nearest five dollar bill - ones are just such a nuisance.

I find that stupid and embarassing. They are counting on you not saying anything for fear of seeming cheap. I would cross the dump off.
While I'm ranting how say you to this?
$55.00 bill, you give the waitperson $100.00.
They say "Did you want change?" I hate that, hate that, hate that. Just bring me my freaking change, I'll decide what to do with it.

I suppose at this restaurant most items are priced at amounts ending in $.95 or $.99 or so? If that is the case, it seems like the restaurant is gaming the system to almost always come out ahead. It takes a lot of items ending in $.95 before you get under $.50 and then the restaurant rounds down in anyone's favor.

I'd like to think I'd be quick enough in my thinking to tell them to go get my change and that I won't participate in their little scam.

I have seen it before, and it doesnt seem like a high crime assuming you were going to leave a tip north of the43 cents
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

but I bet that $.43 never makes its way to the servers, as a tip would.

I usually see this on larger tabs. Say the bill is 143.35 and you leave 200. They bring back the bills figuring you'll work the tip out with that.

Here in the smaller supermarkets (anything outside of the major cities) and the little country stores it is common practice to give a cheap little piece of candy in place of small change (so for comparison, it would be like if you were owed 30 cents and the cashier placed two little fruit drops in your hand).

It was kind of a cool novelty at first (hey, sugar for the walk home!), but now it just bugs me. I hate other people feeling it´s ok to make decisions with my money because it´s a small amount. And not suprisingly, they´re not amused if you try to offer to pay them in the small candies that you´ve been saving up.

Other institutions are basically doing the same thing.

Read your cellular phone contract. They round your calls length of time up to the next minute. It’s never down. So if your call length is 61 seconds, you’re billed for 2 minutes.

Af I remember correctly, Illinois state income tax forms want you to round up or down. For amounts with cents of .51 through .99, you round up to the next higher whole number for the dollar and zeroes for the cents. For amounts with cents of .01 through .50, you use the amount’s dollar as a whole number and zeroes in the cents. They think it makes it easier for the public to do their taxes resulting in less math errors.

A restaurant is not a government agency nor a utility. Could be why people don’t like restaurants doing rounding. Plus they’re not stating their rounding policy up front. You find out after the fact.

what Dewey said. If they don`t want to mess with small change, they should make their prices round numbers, tax included. stop dicking around.

Pricing items at even dollar amounts will not result in after tax totals that are even dollar amounts.

Example . . . if your city's tax rate is an even 8%

Subtotal: $41.00
Tax 0.08 x $41 = $3.28
Total: $41.00 + $3.28 = $44.28

(This is not my opinion; it is a fact) :P

I think it is not legal to price stuff tax-included, is it?
Perhaps the answer varies by state.

i am generally a generous tipper.. i would round his down tho. .. something about his explanation seems a bit fishy, tushy, whatever.

I saved all my change when waiting tables, and would regularly deposit it.. usually it was around 3 or 400 dollars.. I could have changed it at the restaurants but kind of liked taking in all the metal.

I would not like that attitude even tho i would gladly pay the bill to the nearest dollar..up or down.. if i were in a pissy mood, I'd be having a hypothetical conversation with that dude.

It's the norm here.

Bookstores, restaurants, whatever. They round up (or down) to the nearest five cents since they have no one cent pieces.

Rounding up to the nearest dollar, though, is too freaking far.
I cite irreconcilable differences.
