| Psychiatric Meds Are Not A Cure-All; Therapy And Meds Are Both Key | |

Many people who decide to get help in their battle against mental illness are not sure if they want the help while in treatment. And a lot of folks who never get help wrestle with the idea that maybe they should seek help as well. Psychiatric meds get you emotionally ready for therapy by helping you feel better and by making it less upsetting to talk about past trauma with a therapist. Unfortunately, many people who start to feel better come to believe they don't need talk therapy because they feel better now, not realizing that it's not that simple. Meds can't teach you coping skills in the same way that a good therapist can. On the other hand, if your not on the right medication(s), therapy is less likely to help you, as you'll find it harder to believe in positive thinking if most of what you see are the bad aspects of life. That's part of why meds and psychotherapy are equally important. |

What a bunch of crap. The meds are worthless. And so is the the therapy. Been through the psychological ringer with this "industry". It's akin to voodoo and is at the very best, quackery. |

I think the therapy can be helpful, but by and large the drugs are just numbing. |

I never cease to be amazed at the level of medical knowlege here. It's like being with doctors, except of course without the qualifications.

Too right. All the best ones get promoted into management positions for which they're totally unsuited, leaving the dregs behind. |

You may feel that meds are worthless after psychiatrists try to prescribe the right meds for you and they haven't worked yet. But the fact is that everyone's brain chemistry is different. So when they prescribe a pill, they don't know if that medication will work for you. Fortunately, most people sooner or later get on the right pill and benefit greatly from it. So if meds aren't helping you yet, don't give up. |

I've seen them work, and not work. When they work, it's absolutely bloody fantastic. |

Neuroscientists know a lot more about the human brain than they did ten or twenty years ago. But at the same time, they still don't know much about it. They have a long way to go. However, even if they did know a great deal more about the brain, everyone is different both psychologically and biologically, as everyone's life, genetic make up, and perceptions are unique. So psychiatry will always be a soft science, and to a point a real guessing game. |

Unfortunately, there are those who stop taking their meds, as they feel they're somehow knowledgeable enough to know that it's best for them to stop taking their pills despite having no training in psychiatric medicine. They then find the hard way that to suddenly stop taking your meds is a recipe for disaster. Furthermore, if a person stops taking his/her meds which were previously was working for them, the doctor putting them back on those same meds may not work the second time around, or not as well. |
