The school I work in is going to be relicensed by the state. (hopefully!!). The past couple of months have been a red tape nightmare. The rules have rules. They have been printed multiple times, laminated and posted in the classrooms (but not with stick pins!) by every exit, by every telephone, over every sink, in every room without an exterior exit and what the hell lets stick on up on the bathroom ceiling just to be sure. Cross your fingers for us, for tomorrow the inspector spends the day with us... |

Actually the lady was very helpful, her attitude was that she was there to interpret the standards and give us a number of options so that we could keep the character of our school while complying. Some of the standards are so sad when you think of why they were created. We are not allowed to close the door when we go into the bathroom with a child - for instance to change a diaper. If a child does not arrive at school we have to know why - this one was introduced because a baby died inside it's parent car, because they had a brain fart and drove straight to work, and no-one wondered where the child was. One of our volunteer cleaners had forgotten to replace the child safety guard into the electrical outlet right near where the kids sit at dismissal But that kind of thing, you tell them in a letter that it is fixed and it's no problem. The hamster cage and the bird cage need sticking to the counters - she suggested velcro, but anything would do to prevent them being dumped onto the ground. The toilet brush needs moving out of the bathroom. Locks on the bathroom doors have to be higher. In other words 99% common sense, a new pair of eyes looking at things that we are so used to seeing we don't see them any longer. The one complete PITA is a large rock in the playground is going to have to be covered somehow because the edges are too sharp. It's been there forever (well uh, you know...) and no accidents - but if there is one it could be nasty... Yes, it really could, but that one does seem like a complete case of... something. We may put the kids into hamster balls to make sure they are completely safe on the playground. Anyhow, we are good to go for another 2 years.

Honestly? I think it was that we got a really nice lady. Apparently the person who had this case load before was really condescending and patronizing - this one took the attitude that she wanted us to pass. I'm sure she would come down like a ton of bricks on a bad school, but for a school that is working hard, she was working hard too. Just decent

Glad things went well, Jane. A tad annoying, I'm sure, but sounds like the kids are in a good place, and that's what really counts in the end, right? |
