I no longer have a membership. But really enjoyed it, even not purchasing in bulk. They had some GREAT cheeses and meats, and at very reasonable prices. Great deal on my TV was had there as well.

They have an optical section - best prices on contacts that Mr. Lisa could find, especially with the rebate/coupon they run every couple months. They also provide other services -- like banking and insurance. For a while, we had our home and auto insurance through Costco and it was fine and cheap. We ended up finding somewhere cheaper though. And we currently have a savings account through Capital One that gives us an extra .25% interest because we signed up through Costco.

I do find that some things are not cheaper at costco (big jugs of Hydrogen Peroxide, which Mr. Lisa uses as a dental rinse, are significantly cheaper at Walmart). And Costco, at least around here, is a TON of aggravation - from the minute I pull into the parking lot, I am agitated and stressed because there's just too.many.people. They don't take credit cards (except for their amex), don't have an express lane, don't take coupons, the bathrooms are always in some annoying place where you have to abandon your cart and fight your way through the crowded checkout lines to get to them, etc. I hate going to costco, actually.

But I still go, because I simply can't beat the prices of certain stuff. String cheese is like $5 for 12 at my local grocery store. Costco carries them for $9 for 48. And my kids go through a lot of string cheese. Ditto for gogurts, the primo margherita pizzas, etc. I don't care much for their produce - with only a few exceptions, I find it goes bad before I can use it all. (But again, the exception, a huge clamshell package of raspberries for like $3 when the grocery store is charging $4 for a package about 1/4 the size, makes it worth it.)

You just have to hunt for the deals and calculate whether what you'll save will be worth it. (And, if your costco is like mine, you need to factor in what you lose in sanity every time you go, LOL!)

The other side of Costco are the larger purchases like mattresses, car tires, porch furniture, vacuum cleaners, Kitchen Aid mixers, coffee makers, kitchen flatware and pans.

I don't think Costco is so much about buying in bulk, although it is that, but about finding well reviewed products at a good price. They have these boxes of wine glasses now -- 4 for like $14. Gorgeous.

I can't stand the long check out lines at Costco. The only time I will go there is a weekday around openning time and my primary purpose is to replenish some expendable bulk items for the office.

We don't typically have long checkout lines here, but I'd agree that might be a deal breaker for me if there were really long lines.
I hate lines.
I would've been a horrible soviet.

There is a new Costco in my neck of the woods. I've never been but I've only heard good things from friends who have. I will probably stop in some day to check it out. My sister told me it cost them $150 for a membership which seems way high for the average homeowner. She may have gotten it wrong. Isn't Costco like Sam's Club?

Other dog owners have told me that Costo's Kirkland dog food is good and their dog beds are inexpensive. Both comments from 2 different ladies who own and breed Wolfhounds. I guess when you have a dozen plus Irish Wolfhounds you need to be concerned with, not only high quality food, but affordable and bulk buying.

I wonder how much food that many Wolfies go through in a month.

I think you can go in and walk around after checking in at the membership desk.

It is like Sam's. Membership is $55 for regular, $100 for Executive. Sign up and try it. They'll refund your membership in full, no questions asked, if you aren't happy or find you aren't using it. Even if you've been a member for months. It's a no-lose proposition.

Patty, the Kirkland Signature dog food is made by Diamond and they have a nice selection of kibbles including Salmon and Sweet Potato and a chicken and rice. A few others, too, I think. We buy bags and donate them to the local shelter every so often.

Do you at least have Sam's Club or BJ's Wholesale?

We have an Executive Membership, so we get a % back based on what we spend, and if we don't spend enough in a year, we at the minimum get back our membership fee. I don't know why they even charge for it (investment income for a year?).

One thing I've noticed is that when they give out samples, they are most always delicious. But seems harder to make it taste the same at home.

I love their wild rice with chicken dinner - if it is not overly cooked (as it begins to dry out).

There's a whole aisle full of goodies like that this time of year.

I force myself to walk by quickly, looking away.

We have a Costco membership, though any more, due to the exchange rate and proximity to Canada, it is tremendously crowded and frustrating. Pretty much every other car has Canadian plates. People with two grocery carts filled to the brim with milk, and all their family members along (they are allowed to take 5 gallons per person back across the border) make getting through the dairy aisle really difficult.

But it is good for some things. Everything is packaged large, though. I keep a large pantry and freezer, so it works for us. Though frankly, I find I can get as good as or better prices from the Fred Meyer down the street. And Big Lots for canned goods and soap.

Yes, the European cookies are awesome. Those ones with all the different kinds of chocolate. If you are having a party, it's a great place to get stuff - frozen appetizers, pre-made food, cheese, wine, crackers etc. You can get everything you need for an awesome holiday party.

Just went tonight. One of my favorite parts of costco is the frozen foods, they always have interesting stuff I never see at normal supermarkets. Not sure where these manufacturers sell their stuff other than at Costco.

I know all you chefs out there wouldn't consider such pre-made stuff, but I think I eat pretty good. :D

Freezer's well stocked now, mostly with steak. (Not pictured, in deference to our vegetarians.)

I've never understood that. To drive further than need be, sit in border line ups, suck up a whole (or even half) day just to save a few bucks on milk that is now going to sit around for some time. Guess they also are the kind of people who take the day off to cross the line for Black Friday so they can buy the most big-ass fridge on sale to store their gallons of milk.

Not my idea of a good time.

woah, I just got goosebumps. I woke up this morning with "If I was a rich man" going through my head. Couldn't figure out why. I had to google Tevye; wasn't sure who that was.
