Tell me about Costco

HOLY CARP!!!
The only credit card Costco accepts is American Express, AMEX.
And I think they only accept AMEX because they have a relationship with them.
That's fine; I'd rather that price were a few% lower, the fee VISA/MC charges merchants.

If you are already paying an annual fee for an AMEX card you could just get a Costco AMEX card and they waive one of the fees, which is similar.
Then you get annual refunds of 1% 2% or 3% depending on what you buy with the Costco AMEX card at Costco or anywhere else.

People vary.
I don't mind the "atmosphere".
At least it isn't a maze designed to trap you like Rite Aid. :hair:

I avoid Costco when the lines are likely to be long; what the hell is a queue?

All you need to know about Costco is this: $300 of stuff you didn't know you needed when you walked in.

Jon - what I used costco for:

- apples (big crate of fujis for like 5 bucks)
- chicken breasts (a bag of 25 individually wrapped - easy to thaw - for like 15 bucks)
- salmon
- burgers
- salmon burgers
- margherita pizza
- wine
- some clothing/household items like blankets and pillows
- $1.50 hot dog and soda lunch deal

Also, go early in the AM to avoid crazy parking lot / lines. But YMMV

We like it. We get some of our stuff there on a regular basis. Mouthwash, ibuprofen, laundry detergent, coffee, cheese, eggs, dog and cat food, Kleenex, tp, paper towels, fruit, bread, bacon, breakfast cereal, and so forth.

Occasionally get other stuff too, but mostly we get those and simply store the extra.

They have a fixed markup regardless of the product. The treat their employees well. Lines for checkout move fast IMO. At our store, you can go in without a card and if you decide you can simply load up a shopping cart and head to the checkout line. Then you pay for your membership in the line. (Might have been a form to fill out while you shop, I forget).

If you just want to browse without the membership, just ask the lady at the door who's checking id's, where is the membership counter? She'll let you in and you can go wander to your heart's content.

Another article.

Seriously do some research. Let us know what you find. I have only read positive things about their treatment of employees, quality of products, and customer service.

I generally hate Kmart, Walmart, toys R us, and other big box stores but I enjoy Costco and feel I have found some cool things there.

It depends on what you need. What I have trouble fining is good quality individually wrapped frozen chicken breasts.

Costco is very different from Walfart in that you can pretty much count on Walfart stocking a very very complete inventory of virtually everything all year long.
(Obviously they won't have inflatable swimming pools in January.)

Costco stocks whatever they feel like stocking and some items you see today may not be there next week.
I get the impression they only stock stuff that is likely to move fast rather than feeling any obligation to supply everything that everyone might need.
I don't think I can count on Costco having a sink plunger, but I'm sure Walfart will have them.

Costco lowers prices by not paying humans to unload boxes and stock shelves all pretty.
Lots of stuff is just put out on pallets.
That's fine; I'd rather pay less.

Their return policy was so good that people took advantage . . . like buying a big screen TV the day before the Super Bowl and returning it the next day.
Now they have put restrictions on the return of items likely to result in abuse of the policy.
Scumbag people were upgrading cellphones and computers by just returning the old one after a couple years for a full refund then buying a new one.

Yes, they did take advantage. Of course, you cannot beat their price on pine nuts, and if you do a lot of Mediterranean type stuff they are indispensible.

Kirkland brand FTW!

In my pantry now is the olive oil and balsamic vinaigrette.

My dad bought his Audi through Costco last year.

Their Tuscan olive oil is great. Last time they had this Berio organic EVO that I bought and, while it is an ok olive oil, it is not nearly as good as the usual.

No one mentioned the gas. I think it's cheaper than most gas stations around my neighborhood.

And can I peruse the joint without buying the membership first? (which here is $55)
I believe they can let you "trial" a membership for a month (I remember being a trial member once). Give it a shot ... go inside a Costco, make an inquiry at their member services desk. Good luck.

Was rated very high in a survey I read - higher than most of the more expensive ones. We buy it, but it only comes in a 2 pack, and so one bottle sits on the shelf for a while.

Gas is usually cheapest around. Have only found one or two out of the way Arco stations that are comparable.

Not everything at Costco is cheaper - you need to be a smart shopper. We often buy food there - pre made pasta, and some other odds and ends. Cheese is not as good as Trader Joes. They have some cream puff thingies that are good - take them to the barn once in a while during horse shows. Clothes can be ok - buy something once in a while. Alcohol is priced ok. Sometimes find a bargain on DVDs or CDs. Used to buy TP and paper towels there, but you need somewhere to store it all.

All in all, the gas makes it worthwhile.
