This is the point I think AL is missing, in assuming all classical music is high brow, while all 3 minute pop sings are low brow. First define a unit of measurement, then compare. You can't just say "jazz is better than rock" because then you sound ignorant in the face of bands like King Crimson or Mahavishnu Orchestra.

You've got to be more careful. Show me where I said "all classical music is highbrow." You keep missing the point.

In italics, just so we can refer to it later: my point was that such distinctions such as highbrow and lowbrow (or use whatever terms you feel more comfortable with) exist.

I also said that:
1) These distinctions are hard to quantify; that
2) Not only is it debateable where certain genres fall on the scale, but that some even overlap quite a bit; and
3) Most people listen to music from across the spectrum.

I am not trying to make a case for classical music or against rap or anything else. I'm talking about a metric that people seem to completely deny, possibly because it's hard to define and near impossible to quantify.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

Sorry, I can't be bothered. You can make up your own interpretation and argue amongst yourselves about which is right. I'm a bit like Jesus in that regard.

But George and the Destroyers are too much fun. The essence of garage bands.
Mik gets it.

From your home state no less.
As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

I am not clicking NS, I refuse to be rick-rolled again by you.

AL: Sorry if I misunderstood your point, it seemed an important point to you that there was "high brow" and "low brow" music.
I don't disagree.
It isn't hard to define at all - it's just that its definition changes from person to person, hence its uselessness.
I think David Helfgott was a horrible performer using 2 objective measures - technical proficiency and ability to communicate imagery/emotion with the performance.
Other people think he is great by the same two measures.
I could qualify my opinion by stating my experience with pianos, with artists, and as someone who studied performance - but I know others who could cite the same experience, and think he's great.
Rubinstein missed notes all the time, even quipping once that one could write an entire symphony with the notes he's missed. Accuracy wasn't his forte - yet in my mind he still had an amazing ability to communicate with his performance - others would disagree.

My objective judgement of low-brow and high-brow in this case isn't necessarily useful (even though I agree, it exists), because it isn't "made up with and agreed upon" as Kenny is fond of saying.

Mik: No way - I'm talking straightup Jailbreak man!

Renauda: I'm glad I wasn't the only one offended at the Blackmore remarks. :)

I wasn't offended. People either like Blackmore's playing style or they hate it. That's his voice and regardless of what people think, it has influenced countless rock and metal guitarists.
