I had only heard Amy Winehouse on the one big hit she had, recognized she had talent, but didn't realize how much.

What an absolute WASTE - before the drugs and alcohol got her, she was actually a very pretty girl. And man, what a talent. Listen to her version of the Beatles' "All My Lovin"

Gaga's problem is the same as Madonna's. The schtick gets in the way of the talent. She has a good voice (better than the Pre-Evita Madonna, if you ask me), but all the *other stuff* is what you pay attention to. Hopefully she'll mature into a serious performer who can display her talent and craft without the gimmicks.

Oh, that was a great video, by the way.

Oh yeah, did you ever see Gaga do "Bad Romance" on the Ellen DeGeneres show? It was not like the video/single version. She starts it out completely differently - something that Neil Sedaka would have been proud of:

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

How can you tell with all the countless hours of audio doctoring-up each of her songs goes through?

All it is is schtick, there's nothing else going on there. She's an extreme but it's part of a general trend that, to my own dumb disbelief, continues to grow in the music industry. Where are the snows bands of yesteryear? Where are the musicians who write their own songs? Where are the well-written lyrics? The great guitar-picking or piano-playing?
I cite irreconcilable differences.

Yeah, I don't follow country all that much (a lot of it I think really turned to crap around the early 90s, much like everything else), but I know they still have some talented musicians putting stuff out there.

says it all for me.

I miss the days when the actual music produced meant more than how you looked. So much theatre and bad underwear and hats these days, to distract from any actual talent.

But yeah, I think Amy had real talent, and would have like to see where she went with it. The girl could sing, and was interesting to listen to.

Not really. DT is my favorite "new" band even though they have been around for a long time.

I haven't heard everything they have done to date so I can't say I like all of it.

I'm not a "mainstream music" type. That includes about 98% of all pop, rock and country and quite of bit of jazz.

Mainstream music is boring and sometimes it is downright physically painful to my brain.

Since when was jazz mainstream? :)

I hope you haven't been listening to Kenny G, because that's pretty much akin to asking for a drone strike.

No Kenny G. I can't stand him.

Mainstream jazz exits. It's what most people like. I don't like most of it. big band, straight forward jazz without any real syncopation, or polyrhythms. It's just boring.

I'm off the beaten path when it comes to most music.

Blues is mostly boring to me as well. Except one of my favorite albums of all time is Miles Davis, Kind of Blue. No boring stuff on that album.

I can't really explain it well. I just know good stuff when I hear it.

Most music just doesn't make the grade.

What do you call "real syncopation"? To me, it's either syncopated or it's not. Is it about how much syncopation there is in a piece?
And how are you today?

Jazz without syncopation?

You must be talking about Lawrence Welk.

(Nitpick - Kind of Blue is jazz, not blues. And yes, it's a wonderful album.)

No it's bloody not. 'So What' is a 32 bar piece based on 2 Dorian modes. Flamenco Sketches and Blue in Green are both modal ballads.

Sheesh!
