This is why people love protests. We find the imagery so compelling. Any excuse will do. Let's all live history by creating it through stupidity, finding someone in a uniform and taunting them till they retaliate. It means we're really important and it means we're making a difference. |

Didn't mean it in any anger. Just noted that so many of those pics were from various "occupy" protests, none of which mean anything, yet somehow the imagery is compelling enough to make it into a retrospective of the most important pics of the year. Getting your photo taken at such an event while pepper spray is being shot in your face is the ultimate prize and exactly why people attend those things. |

Maybe some of them. Maybe some want a better world and think this will help. You apparently don't think it will help, and that's fine. |

I'm sure they believe they're helping make a better world. I would just note that it's very human and normal for a young person to see such a pictorial retrospective and think to themselves how cool it would be if they could someday attend such a protest themselves. Next time someone says "hey lets go protest, it's for a good cause", it's not as if they'll think real hard about the issues. They'll accept it as a given that it's for a good cause, and enjoy the fact that they're doing something story-worthy that day. If they manage to get such a pic taken of them, it'll be a story they'll tell proudly the rest of their lives. |
