The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

I loved the first Star Wars movie (didn't see the original run but eventually saw it as a teenager as I recall) but can't quite get the bad taste of the prequels out of my mind.
I remember going to Episode 1 (or is it 4?) of Star Wars in the theater back in 1977. It was like nothing I had ever seen before on the screen, big or small. However, as I reflected on it, it was a pretty simple story, and pretty one-dimensional characters. The fleshed it out in Episode 2 (or is it 5?) and that's why Empire is a better movie.

Trek really tried to have more complex stories (bad Spock) and insightful characters (the Frank Gorshin episode). Yeah, some were pretty light-hearted (the Tribbles), but despite the cheesy effects (hey, it was the 60s!), the stories were good. I dare say, better. And they did it for several dozen episodes (remember "Who weeps for Apollo?").
Yep! Very cool episode.
As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

The other thing to remember is that ST:TOS ran for 3 years, airing 79 episodes. To expect the writers to get it right EVERY SINGLE TIME is probably unreasonable (see "Walking Dead" threads). Star Wars had 3 movies, each about 2 hours. The ability to explore a more complex idea is probably easier in a series that recurs every week, as opposed to a 2 hour popcorn extravaganza. If it doesn't work, hey, there's always tribbles next week.

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

My favourite Deep Space Nine episode was when they went back in time and witnessed the Tribble encounter. It was hilarious.

Personally, I think Babylon 5 far exceeded the quality of either of the 'Star' franchises. Lord of the Rings in space, baby.

That being said, Trek fans do tend to take themselves a little too seriously and tend to forget about the not so good episodes.

srsly?

I know everyone thinks of "trekkies" when they think of sci-cons, but Star Wars is the prevalent geek-meme of people taking themselves too seriously.
At very least there are extremely serious fans in both camps, but just the sheer number of YouTube results of fan dedications to Star Wars vs. Star Trek seems to put the "taking themselves too seriously" title easily into the Star Wars camp.
