I'll give you a clue -- it's a map of the USA.

What do the blue and red indicate?

Surely not in MT. MT is the wild card, nothing happens there. Must be something geographical.
As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

That's why I figured it'd be per capita. I mean, look at Nevada.

Maybe water-related? The huge increase just about lines up with aquifer usage.

By the bye, it's an interesting way to visualize a percentage - taking the state's shape and deflating it till the area is the percentage of the original area. I bet it's visually confusing more than say a pie chart would be - intuitively I bet most people would peg the percentage of area of the red CA at more than 45% of the blue CA area, for instance.

But with a pie chart, the states are just conceptual; least with these you see their layout and despite possible tricks to the eye, you can still see the general trend (that California has about half filled in whereas New York has barely anything.)

The numbers should nullify the guesswork; I still think it's a good idea.

Yeah, it's not a bad idea. Maybe not quite as good as say filling up the state with red from the bottom till the percentage of red is what you want it to be, but pretty good. Better than a pie chart stuck in the middle of the state. I was just commenting on the difference between intuition and reality when it comes to relative areas of concentric shapes.

Yeah, it's not a bad idea. Maybe not quite as good as say...
Sorry, this has nothing to do with anything, but well, this is TNCR. This sort of thing is at least allowed if not considered de rigueur.

There's a guy who posts comments on Amazon UK products that reminds me of you, Horace. His reviews get taken down eventually but he causes some serious debate beforehand, and a friend of mine here saves 'em before they're deleted. Some highlights:

His review for Catcher in the Rye:
Quote:

"I found this book very confusing. I read through the whole thing in an afternoon but I still don't understand who it is they want me to kill, J.F.K. or Ronald Reagan? And y'know, since they're both dead I guess the book's kind of out-dated."

His review for some kind of vacuum cleaner:
Quote:

"This thing worked great for me the first time I used it, but so help me I could never get it to work again because I couldn't find the power switch! So now the thing is just sitting in my closet collecting dust, but it's not collecting dust in the way the manufacturer had intended. I wish they'd design a vacuum cleaner where it wasn't so hard to find the power switch."

(So of course he's received about 50 responses saying, you idiot! The switch is right THERE, on the LEFT SIDE, underneath the power cord!)

He also has a stock review for about a dozen classic rock albums (most notably the Beatles White Album but he's also done this with Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan and others):
Quote:

"This album's alright. I mean it's pretty good for its time, but as everyone knows it's not quite up to the calibre of modern day musicians, like Fred Durst."
I cite irreconcilable differences.

My guess would be percent of federal lands in each state. At least it would be pretty much right-on for Oregon.

dang that was going to be my guess, after seeing that Nevada had the largest red to blue percentage.

I'm surprised at the small percentage that the Federal govt owns in Texas.
