Herman the German is a crane.

In 1948 a huge floating German crane was taken by the Americans as a spoil of war and used at a California port.
It's gone now, but I remember seeing it whenever I drove through Terminal Island.

Here it is in 1980 lifting the Spruce Goose.

This is Herman the German.

In 1948 a huge German crane was taken by the Americans as a spoil of war and used at a California port.

I remember seeing it whenever I drove through Terminal Island.
That, is a German crane.

Hence the desire to call it new, I suppose. ;)

New Ulm is also the home of Schell's Brewing Company, one of the oldest in the US. http://www.schellsbrewery.com/home.php

We had a fun tour of the brewery several years ago, including a stop in the tasting room at the end of the tour.

It's an interesting drive to get to the brewery out in the country beyond the edge of town. It's tucked back into a hillside and is quite private. The old house and the grounds adjacent to the brewery are lovely.
