HOLY CARP!!!
|
Herman the German is a crane. In 1948 a huge floating German crane was taken by the Americans as a spoil of war and used at a California port. It's gone now, but I remember seeing it whenever I drove through Terminal Island. Here it is in 1980 lifting the Spruce Goose.

HOLY CARP!!!

I wonder why anybody would call a city New Ulm, given that the original Ulm is not exactly something to be proud of

Hence the desire to call it new, I suppose. ![]() New Ulm is also the home of Schell's Brewing Company, one of the oldest in the US. http://www.schellsbrewery.com/home.php We had a fun tour of the brewery several years ago, including a stop in the tasting room at the end of the tour. It's an interesting drive to get to the brewery out in the country beyond the edge of town. It's tucked back into a hillside and is quite private. The old house and the grounds adjacent to the brewery are lovely. |

I love it when the copycat thread gets more activity than the original thread.
