HOLY CARP!!!
I didn´t know her, but my neighboring Volunteer friend was in her training group (she arrived here a few months after I did).

She was killed in a car crash, instantly, Sunday morning. Her Paraguayan boyfriend was driving, and the blame is being placed on a deteriorating highway. He remains in a coma. His dad is a well-respected journalist here.

Emily Balog

Only 24 years old (the PC release here has it wrong).

In the 50 years of PC, some 200-odd Volunteers have died during their service, with the main cause of death being car accidents. This is only the 2nd death for PC Paraguay in its 45 years (the first being in 1989).

for those that read Spanish

Very sad. It sounds like she was doing important and compassionate work, and making a positive difference in the lives of many others. I hope that we offer some comfort to her family.

A beautiful, caring, and so young girl, killed in a !@#$% car crash.

That is so sad, beyond words. Those in the Peace Corps give so much, and are such special people to do so. All I can hope for is that there is something called heaven, and that she is there, somehow received with special honors.

Her parents must be devastated.
What a dreadful phone call to have to make. The newspaper says it was the dad of her boyfriend who actually phoned her parents first.

Not to be melodramatic, but I keep thinking about the fact that she and the guy would be going to visit her home in a few weeks. I remember how incredibly excited my parents and I had gotten this time last year as I prepared to go home for my visit. That anticipation is so strong.

You reluctantly buy the little life insurance deal as you prepare to leave for your new country, but you certainly don´t expect that you´ll be one of the incredibly small percentage of people who actually needs it.

How terribly sad. What a tragic loss for all, especially her family. I cannot imagine their grief.

I'm very sorry to hear of this. Even among parents who lose children, losing them at that time, after decades raising them and just beginning to watch their adult lives unfold, has to be the worst of the worst.
As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

This is sad Opti. I'm sorry.

I think of you down there practically every day. I'm not very well travelled or informed of this part of the world, but I do hope you are careful and cautious while living there. I just had to sound like a mother hen and say this, but I do worry about you.
