About what? The smell of rancid butter? I really don't recommend going to the effort to find out! Maybe others don't have the same reaction as I do, but I really do think it's in the top 5 foulest things I've ever smelled.

Never smelled rancid butter. I keep mine in the fridge. It still spreads easily enough if you slice it very thinly. |
| In my defense, I was left unsupervised. | |

Only real butter in this house -- I buy it at Costco. When I was a kid, all we had was real butter. My mom bought all of our eggs and butter from a Mrs. Ford, "the egg lady" who came to the house every other week with our order. Sort of like the milkman, I guess. It was years before I knew butter came in sticks (Mrs. Ford's was a round wheel) and that most of the eggs at the grocery store were white, not the brown we got from her. |

I'll easily take the smell of pig guts and poop on a hot summer's day than rancid butter.
