Try this on your bread. Real easy. In a sealable small container (Jar) 1 & 1/2 Cups Olive Oil (non EV) Three or four gloves of garlic just halfed I/2 tsp Oregano (dry) Hand full of torn up fresh Basil. 1/4 tsp crushed red pepper. Allow to sit overnight or at least a few hours. Lasts for a few weeks. You can add oil to it as you use it up. |

We always had good butter and the best dairy products as they were available, fresh from the cow as much as possible, which was maybe 10% of the time. |

I don't think I've ever seen margarine in any of my family's fridges. Butter spreads at times, but never margarine. Dairy farming family to the core!

hmmm. I must have missed the memo. We always buy margerine: it's lower in calories, doesn't clog the arteries. Or, that's what I thought.

Yes and no. Some margarines are pretty heart healthy...Fleischman's makes one with olive oil that tastes pretty durn good. But some margarines are worse for your heart than butter. |

Well if you're keeping it in your fridge, no wonder it's hard to spread! |

I am. It usually comes in a box of four quarter-pound sticks. I keep it in the butter compartment at the top of the fridge door. I shave a thin amount off the top, which makes it quicker to melt and easier to spread. I think some people do not refrigerate it. |

Comes in one pound slabs, wrapped in foil. Never seen the 1/4 lb things. Chop off a chunk to last a week or so, put in butter dish/small bowl, put on counter, repeat as needed. The rest stays in the fridge. Is not complicated. |

I'm pretty sure butter is unsafe at any temperature. |

Until it goes rancid. I'd say 2 - 3 weeks, depending on the room temp. |

Sounds about right. I try to only keep about a week's worth of butter out at a time, mainly because I like to replace the dish with a clean one on a weekly basis. Haven't ever had it go rancid on me; sometimes if we have a real hot spell during the summer, I'll put the dish in the fridge. But it's fine the rest of the year; guess we keep the house pretty cool. The butter stays too hard, if anything. Sometimes I whip it up with some olive oil to keep it spreadable. |

Yes. Our kitchen is usually at about 65 degrees or cooler in the winter. Butter keeps for several days at that temp, and before it would go bad it would be gone. |

That's a great idea! I put the whole stick on the dish, but I don't eat butter often enough, so it has gone rancid on me before. The smell of rancid butter is one I can't deal with. So gross! I'll easily take the smell of pig guts and poop on a hot summer's day than rancid butter.
