At one point, my son worked for a major chain which engages in this kind of business. It is a business designed to prey upon the weak of mind, the un-credit worthy and the poor. Their operating and sales manuals cover hundreds of pages.

The tv's and computers are new, but never this year's models...they are bought in wholesale lots from the manufacturers. So...you may be buying that new tv for $25/week, but it will be a tv with two year-old technology.

Most of the time, by the time the customer gets past the down payment and pays a couple of month's notes, the store is in the black. If they have to repossess, they'll let the item go a bit cheaper the next time, but the profit margin will be larger.

It's like a license to coin money.

Garage sales do not offer usury easy credit. These places and 'payday lenders' do prey upon the poor. They are repugnant. The question remains though, if they were not available legally, who would be preying upon them illegally? The market and the government have taken over the numbers racket and a lot of the loan sharking.

Actually, I'm a bit surprised that Obie isn't picking up the tab. If a cell phone is now a *right* with the taxpayer flitting the bill, can a 52" TV be far behind?

I have a very good friend, raised very poor upon the reservation in Oklahoma, who has managed to lead a nice, middle-class life. First, he enlisted and thrived in the Air Force, where he learned some valuable skills, and retired after twenty years. He then parlayed those skills into an operating engineer job for a local sewer system, and he will probably retire from that job, becoming a double-dipping pensioner in his final retirement.

He still has a lot of habits left over from his poor days, though.

One of the things he likes to do is rummage through folk's curbside trash. He has his regular route through town, based on garbage pick-up days. Interestingly enough, he NEVER hits middle-class neighborhoods. Why? Because according to him, they never put anything out, unless it is irrepairable or worn out.

One place to rummage is in the richest part of town, where people don't bother with fixing anything, they just buy new. His other favorite haunt is on the poor side of town, where people stupidly throw away repairable items.

He has made an amazing amount of side money doing this over the years.

Good idea. And good to know about different classes. Interesting.

My boss goes dumpster diving. I've heard he has around $8m. Weird, but maybe that's why he still has that much!
And how are you today?

There's gotta be more to it than that, I don't go to garage sales and I'm not poor.

I have dumpster-dived (though not recently) and picked up things thrown out by others (within the past two years). My big savings opportunity is thrift stores. Other than clergy shirts - and I actually have several second-hand of those, donated from the estate of a deceased pastor - I'd estimate 90% of what I wear was discriminatingly picked up in a thrift shop for pennies on the dollar. Shirts, shorts, jeans, dress slacks, shirts, sweaters, suits, sportcoats (including the herringbone tweed jacket I'm wearing now), shoes. And I dress far better now than when I only shopped retail.

You're so rich you live somewhere where there aren't any garages.

yoau think there would be some type of mandate preventing people from preying upon the poor bastards.

.... and you have to have a car and access to neighborhoods where the garage sales are awesome (think $400 bronze sculpture for one dollar awesome).
