HOLY CARP!!!
|
was just watching some news footage of shopping in the US today. I'm guessing what I get to see are extreme examples of what it's all about about, but really? All this, just to get more STUFF? I cannot imagine getting in on this. |

I am with you, Sue. I would make gifts from Popsicle sticks before I would head out into that scene. Around me, though, we just have turkeys crashing into restaurants. No mob scenes that I know of. |

Not for all the tea in China would I venture out shopping on BF. There just isn't anything I want that badly. |

I went out yesterday and bought a BAB at our local grocery. That's it. I would not go to any mall/big box store. |

I went to Stop & Shop to get some cheese. It was completely deserted. Presumably everybody was buying stuff they don't really need. I'm a little surprised nobody's blamed Obama yet for this monstrous display of voracity. You chaps must still be digesting your turkey. |

Well, I think the most ridiculous spectacles aren't about getting more stuff per se, rather the people are trying to be one of the few who get (essentially) free money handed out by big retailers. They have a handful of popular, often big ticket items that they sell for well below cost, which is what the people line up for and sometimes fight over. I view it as hugely irresponsible and more than a little tacky, but it is what it is. (AL put it best, in other words) |

Consumers drove the economy. Isn't that what everyone wants back? We go every year. Don't necessarily buy much, but often do buy stuff like DVDs that are on sale. Yesterday we went to Walmart, Target, Kohls, H&M, Nordstrom, The Loft and Macys. My wife found clothes for work at The Loft for 50% off (everything in the store). Picked up 2 seasons of MadMen on sale for $7.99 each, and 3 seasons of Weeds for the same at Target. Bought youngest daughter some clothes for Christmas at H&M (not on sale). And wife and daughter got some PJs at Macy's (on sale). Didn't see any fights or have any parking problems. Think we left the in laws house around 7.00 am and got back about 1.00pm. All in all, we had a fun time and got a start on the Christmas shopping. Frankly, I don't think it was as busy as previous years so I'd say people are either shopping on line, or are still not spending money. |

False correlation fail. Consumers and the economy people want back. Folks getting trampled to get iPads 40% off and the total forfeiture of manners and civility during full-contact consumerism isn't something any sane person would condone. |

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy | |

Yeah that's an even worse analogy. Nobody here is condemning going shopping. The problem is stores setting up a situation in which people get trampled to death every year from sale events that are completely out of control. It seems you can't tell the difference between the two. |
