Honesty is the best policy. ![]() Say, doc, what are the typical reimbursement rates that insurance companies offer to healthcare providers for natural birth in a hospital vs. C-section in a hospital (sans complications)? Is one typically significantly higher than the other? I get the sense that insurance companies won't approve a C-section unless the OB says that there is a medical need for the patient to go with C-section. So those expecting insurance to cover the cost cannot just "choose" C-section willy nilly. Is that right? |

Really don't know. My fee is about the same for a c-section vs. epidural for labor. Nope. Some women are "choosing" to have sections these days. Purely elective. I can't address the reimbursement for those, because I don't follow it. However, that number is an extremely small percentage (in our place) of the sections we do. Most are done for 1) Previous c-section 2) Fetal compromise 3) Failure of labor to progress Secondly, insurers rarely "approve" a c-section, unless it's elective (see #1). Otherwise they are emergencies. |
