The first time i went out with mr. apple, we went orienteering, with a compass, a map in a fine piece of woods. We had packed a lunch and turkeys were flying everywhere. Very neat birds.... they flew pretty low and we spooked them all the time.. It must have been a flock, or they were having a meeting. at about 11 AM, i suggested we sit down and eat. We were almost to the end of the 'course'. We were enjoying our sandwiches when a team of 4 guys ran by and said... 'We win, We WIN!!" i didn't it know it was a race. Anyway, then Kim's brothers wanted to go turkey hunting, I suggested we go eat again at a buffet instead. Kim's family members are memorable eaters. They filled up their plates about 8 times each.. the waitresses' eyes were absolutely huge with astonishment. You know when you go to the buffets and the huge people are so unabashed at filling their plates time after time? I about died with embarrassment and in fact went out to smoke a cigarette (this was about 18 years ago). |

The second date certainly sounds interesting. But what was it about that first one that led to 8 years passing before the next date?? |

A good thread for people to relate their "first date" stories, I'd say. |

Heh. It was October 1976, and I was the intern on the respiratory care service in the ICU (Mrs. K was a nurse, and she hated interns. All ICU nurses hate interns - it's in their blood.). Several mornings a week, I would meet her and some of the other nurses in the cafeteria at breakfast, and, being the friendly sort, I would just yak it up and have a good time. However, I was 6 months ahead of the other interns (having done 6 months of an anesthesia residency on completion of medical school) and I was comfortable with sick patients, bad situations, cardiac arrests, etc. I wasn't a typical intern, having spent 6 months in the OR. She knew that I was coming out of a bad marriage and she thought that the last thing she needed was a cocky little intern on the rebound. So, one Thursday night, I was on call, and a bunch of us decided to order out Chinese. Mrs. George was in on the order. She ordered a hamburger. Not a cheeseburger - a hamburger. It thought it...strange. A month later, I was out of the ICU rotation, and I was on the medical floors. All of the house staff used to go to a local bar on Friday nights, and I ran into her there. We started to talk, and I suggested dinner after we left the bar. She couldn't, because she had to go and ride her horse. However, the next night we went to a local crepe place ("The Magic Pan"). I guess you'd call that our "first date." Three days later we went for Chinese (no, no burger that night), and the next weekend we went to a movie ("Marathon Man" - not a good movie for a date!) Two weeks later, we spent the weekend at her apartment. That was 35 years ago this weekend. Two weeks after that, we agreed to get married. That was in December. We married in June. omgosh.. he was such a white nerd pita. (i know, kind of racialist). He parked his car and that was it. We walked everywhere to save gas... To Wesport for a movie, no snacks and i payed for my own ticket. then 1.5 miles to the Plaza to window shop.. then a mile to the art gallery then back to the plaza. I was starving so i told him i was going to pop into McDonald's and buy myself a hamburger. He went off on a rant about how McDonald's charged him for water once.. that was it for me. I made up my mind to politely dump him. We walked another mile back to my apartment and he asked if i wanted to go out on another date. He had told me he lived with his parents (age 30 then) and little did i know that he already owned some houses... anyway, i said NO WAY JOSE.... that's what i really said. I thought he was a moneyless loser. When he called me back the 8 yrs. later, he said he had bought a box of classical piano music at an estate sale for 2 dollars and would i like to buy it. I said OK... and that was that.. He had been doing some carpentry work for my parents so I did catch a glimpse of him occasionally. (insert a hilarious story later). we were married 6 months later. For some reason we really got along fantastically the 2nd time. we talked on the phone nonstop and got along wonderfully when we were out (wallking of course). |
