ZOOOOOM!

So, I have this notebook I've been keeping notes in for about 8-10 years, about the time I started to take this whole writing thing more seriously. Nothing is in any particular order, and there was no strict subject matter; I just put in things I thought were too good to forget. Here's an example: ![]() Well, the thing was getting a little too cumbersome for its own good. It's now about 130 pages long, and presents a number of problems. For one, what would happen if it got waterlogged, caught fire, whatever? What if I left it somewhere? And doesn't it suck that I can't organize the thing according to its content? So, I decided to digitize it. All of it, the whole damn thing. It took me a couple of weeks. About 50 pages or so were so complicated visually that I just had to scan them in; there was just no other way to do it. But the rest of the text I wanted to be able to edit and organize, so that meant typing it in. Which took considerable effort. (Note: the typed in sections came from my writing book, which is also a compilation of other, rougher notes I've taken in classes, or on my own. So the typed-up parts of the text file have been written a word at a time by me at least twice already at some point or another.) After I got done, though, I thought, hey, it's 2011. Having a mere digital copy is not enough. I should add hotlinks and sh!t so that I can refer to the thing on, say, an iPod or some such if I wanted. And I should set the thing up so that updates are easy to do. So I did that also. Here's the Table of Contents; each of the headings there refer to some of the sections, some screenshots of which I've added below. The whole document is 140 pages. I guess that means you could say I've written a book. ![]() Some poetry notes: ![]() Regarding old typesetting: ![]() Some more poetry stuff (an example of some of the scanned stuff) ![]() |

Close! "Whoever had erected it was a bird-lover, not a squirrel enthusiast, that much is certain." It's from The Fire Apes by Loren Eiseley, and it is hands down one of the best essays ever written. |

If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead

Awesome piece of work, Aqua. How did you establish the categories? Did you already have them in mind while typing in? |

Wouldn't make sense that way. Hired lovers and squirrel enthusiasts, or any possible relations thereof are not mutually exclusive. |

Some parts were pretty easy. The scanned stuff I felt should all go together, since they were of the same thing (me picking stuff apart, so to speak). Others could go either way. Basically I typed everything up first, then tried to establish categories later, based on where I'd personally look for the information once it was all done. |

That is awesome, Aqua. The kind of thing many people think they should get around to doing, but never do and then it's too big a task. Way to go. |

Yes, I'd say you have the beginnings of a book there, maybe more than one.

Not really; the typed stuff as I said was also all written out by hand at least twice already, and this is information that 1) I might forget the details at some point, 2) I don't already know backwards and forwards. And of course the stuff I've read is easily ten times the length. They're rather condensed notes in other words. |

Well, my track record would actually be much closer to his than, say, John Creasey. (One story about Joyce is that his friend walked in on him one day and found his head on the desk. "What's wrong, James? Is it the work?" He nodded. "Well, how much have you written today?" "Seven words," Joyce said. "Seven? But James, that's good, for you!" "Yes," he said, pulling his head up, "but I don't know what order they go in!") But no, I'm neither a James Joyce nor a John Creasey. |
