Simple example: How many good free text editors exist for Mac OS compared to Windows?
How many do you need?
One is sufficient, if it satisfies my requirements. For instance, I want
- extensible syntax highlighting, code folding, ... for many different programming languages
- ability to record macros
- ability to configure the character encoding
- search by regular expressions
- integration with all major version control systems
- tabbed editing, various options to compare files and display side by side, configurable tab size, ...
- not Emacs(!)

For Windows, there are several alternatives, such as Notepad++ or Context. Could you list the Mac editors satisfying these minimal requirements? Ktnxbye.

I don't think that anyone would dispute that there is more freeware available for Windows than for Mac OS. This says nothing about the quality of the OS, but a lot about the practical usability of it.

Finally
No clue. As a matter of fact, I have no clue most of the things he just described. I always believed that using the right tool for the right job is what one should do. If you're going to be programming on a Mac, surely there are ways to do that using some Macintosh software. However, for the average user, is all that stuff really necessary?

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

That's why I said that Mac OS is convenient for "standard" stuff.

Sure, but why would it be so unacceptable to you if it happens to be the case that there are more or better programming tools for Windows?

Perfectly acceptable to me that there are more/better programming tools for Windows. No problem there.

As far as I am concerned, since I run Windows inside my Mac, I can run any tool that requires Windows -- the only exceptions are tools that require low level hardware access to specialty peripherals.

Boot time is MUCH faster.

Regarding bloatware, yes and no, it depends who the manufacturer is and where you buy it.

And shame on Apple for not allowing Windows users to run Mac OS inside Windows!

Did they fix the ridiculous boot up time?
Only if you delete all that bloatware and get rid of the free anti-virus they give you.

I just picked this one up for my wife to replace the teeny netbook with the broken charging jack.

Seems like a pretty good deal - there was one that spec'd similar at Costco for the same price but it was an Acer. I feel much better about a Lenovo.

My girlfriend has been loving her Lenovo G770. The screen is huge! I even got her a cooler pad that that sits under the laptop and blows fans at it. It will come in handy when she's got a horde of zombies to kill.

w00t! We are all in like Flynn.

My wife doesn't do any gaming, besides solitaire, so this little number is still overkill.

TextWrangler is all one needs. Its big brother BBEdit is also a kick a$$ text editor.

Of course vi comes standard with MacOS X.

my theory is that when a man buys a woman a new techie gadget, he is usually looking for something he will look forward to enjoying himself...

that said, i seem to have an urge to get the wife a new ipad for the next b day.

Just purchased one of these for work. Core-i7, 8 Gig, 14" screen, under 4 lbs.

Should have it in a couple weeks.

While it ain't mine, since I can take it with me everyday it does (so far) satisfy my growing desire to buy a new one for home.
