Time for a new laptop

It's time to refresh my girlfriend's laptop. Her Dell is on its last legs and her birthday is approaching. I just pushed the "buy now" button on Amazon for this product. It doesn't hurt that I have an Amazon card and have 12 months with no interest to pay it off. Incredible deal for what it offers IMO. Will be our first foray into Lenovo (IBM).

Nice! You are a good boyfriend!
Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool.

I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss!

Way to go. I've heard good things about Lenovo, seems like a good choice.

I recently bought myself an Asus (K53S), which looks like it has the same finish. Very classy colour, imo.

Sweet laptop! 6gb RAM, BluRay, i5 processor, very cool. She'll love it.

What are the odds...I'm actually shopping around for a new laptop for my GF for Christmas. Her current laptop, that she uses for work at client meetings, etc...is also a little out dating and sluggish, with poor battery life now. So I'm hoping to get her a nice upgrade as well. Was curious to see what Black Friday Thursday will bring, but it seems there are good deals (like yours) out there year-round now.

She'll love it NS.
I've had really good experience with the ThinkPad/Lenovo laptops over the years. They've definitely been workhorses for me, it should do very well for her.

Yeah, superspecs for the price. She wants a big screen and she wants the ability to be able to play Left 4 Dead online with me. This laptop is supposed to deal with games pretty decently. We are going to be a zombie killing machine!!

Isaac, I'm gonna be pissed if you find this laptop alot cheaper on Black Friday!!

Someone's gotta hold back those tanks while you find a gas can.

NS - I went ahead and bought a new laptop today too. Also went with a Lenovo! I forgot that's the same brand you got until I just checked back in on this thread.

Is it the G770? With the i5 cpu? With 6gb ram? With the ATI Radeon 6650 graphics card? With the 17.3" screen?
With the blueray drive? With the 750gb hard drive?

No, she wanted a smaller laptop (she carries it all the time for work) so I got her a 14" screen. Found a good black friday deal, I got it in black.

Pretty similar specs, although your screen is bigger and you have bluray.

Lenovo FTW!

Yikes, that was an expensive click! For the same specs, I'd have to pay $1,500+ compared to the $599* I paid.

*Was originally $1,099, online for $899, minus $300 for black friday.

I like Macs. But you do realize some people prefer a Windows 7 laptop over a mac, right?

You're probably still under the impression that Windows computers still look like Windows 95 and have a blue screen of death every 2 seconds. Windows 7 computers are quick, clean, and beautiful. :)

My wife's net book (13.1" screen?) has a broken power jack. It cost us only $250 two years ago. It still charges if you set it down and fiddle w/the cord just right. I think we will replace it with one that has a 15.6" screen and I might try to fix that jack myself. (Cheapest I could find someone to repair it was about $85). I wouldn't even mind if the cord was hard wired in. Then I'd give it to the kids to do internet crap and stay off my desktop.

Do they still ship with all that bloatware? That's what finally moved me off of them three years ago. (well, that and the disaster that was Windows Vista)
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

Yep, Windows 7 is a decent OS these days.

What bothers me most about it is that its command line sucks, but then again one can always install cygwin.

We also have a Macbook at home. My impression is that it is more convenient than Windows as long as you want to do "standard" things, but Windows is vastly more configurable and extensible by third-party tools. Simple example: How many good free text editors exist for Mac OS compared to Windows?
