We had a talk in one of my classes recently about who even writes by hand anymore. I raised my hand, as did one other person. People were amazed. "Really? You write out by hand? Why?" I told them that for one, it slows me down, and gets me to concentrate on what it is I'm writing. "Yeah but don't you cross out a whole lot of stuff as you go?" Of course I do, but that's another thing. When I write down words on the page, it's much more of a commitment than hitting a key on a keyboard. You can cross things out if you need to, sure, but you can't just delete a day's work off the screen like it were nothing. Writing by hand is less frivolous. Writing in cursive is similar, except it has an added dimension of being more aesthetically pleasing, in addition to being easier to write once you learn the process. Gives your words an added dimension of value that would otherwise not exist in, for example, text written in a sans serif font. |

What's funny is you think you're making a good point but you have no idea why people actually did that, do you? |

Fail! Do not pass go, do not collect 200 dollars. Because they thought what they were writing was important. That there should be a permanent record of the information, permanent enough to outlast even the writer's life. Seems people had more hindsight back then. |

I had to learn to read and write cursive in the third grade. Rumors back then were that all assignment in later grades would have to be done exclusively in cursive. In reality, aside from signing my name, I've never used cursive since. |

Aqua, I too prefer to write things out by hand than to type it most of the time. |

We were told that, too. Held true until college, though. And I'm not saying everyone should write everything out by hand, in cursive, all the time. Just making the case that it's not a useless skill, and doing so is not a waste of time. (Hey jgoo! )
