How fast is your Internet connection now?

http://speedtest.net/

On my wireless laptop with Verizon FIOS fiber-optic service, my speed is currently . . .

Right now? Thanks to usenet, not nearly as fast as yours, at least not on the speedtest .swf :)

You could've typed fewer words into google and had the answer...

Usenet is a part of the internet older than the www. It's still the wild west, and a place where anyone can download anything at the fastest speeds HTTP can handle (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol - the protocol that powers the internet).

speedtest is the site you linked to, and displayed results from. They use a flash app to test your speed.
Flash files are of extension .swf, and are called "swifs." So I can run the speedtest "swif" right now (in other words, test my speed with speedtest.net), but it will look horrible, because I have a sustained throughput of 2MB/s right now maxing out on usenet.

If you'd like to learn more about usenet, read up on both "usenet" and "newsgroups."

Also - just to clarify why my 2MB/s might look slow compared to 15, a quick tutorial on Internet speeds.

1MBs != 1Mbps. There are eight bits to a byte, and B = byte where b = bit. With other factors, parity is more like 10:1 rather than 8:1. and so 1MBps is really somewhere between 8Mbps and 10Mbps. So the 2.44MBps I'm hitting right now is somewhere just over 20Mbps.

Well now I'm thoroughly confused.

What does the ! mean here? 1MBs != 1Mbps.

Let's say there's a thread about our weather and we are posting our temps.
Everyone posts in F, but one guy posts in Kelvin so someone says, "Huh?".
Then he explains the formula to convert from F to K.

Why did he post in K? Because he can, and show that he knows something others may not.

People like this won't know how annoying they are till someone tells em.
Some will get it and stop talking to regular people in a way that loses them.
Some are permanently hopelessly stuck in their world of tech speak.
A couple clearly think it's their job to train the world to learn everything that they know. :rolleyes2:

I worked with many engineers like this for 23 years.

Whatever.

Wow!!!
I heard Europe is way ahead of the US on speed.

Is that at home or work?
If at home is that about average?
May I ask how much you pay?

That's at work. I think the speed would be even much higher if I'd be connected to the backbone with Gigabit Ethernet instead of 100MBit/s, because we sit on a rather big pipe.

At home the results are much more modest:

Since I live in a somewhat rural area I can only get 16MBit DSL here. This costs about 20 Euros per month. In my former home, we had a fibre glass connection - this was rather cool since one could get 1GB/s access if desired. But Germany is unfortunately not very active with regard to high speed internet connections - in some areas like mine 16MBit/s is the maximum. In the larger cities you can typically get 50MBit/s.

Kenny, I'm not showing anything off.
Both measurements have always been used, but somewhere along the way they started being used interchangeably.

Many applications give you a measurement in MB/s - so I was telling you I had a 2.4MB/s downstream connection - then explained why that wasn't 1/8th of your 16Mb/s connection.
Your analogy with temperature is off - it would be more like you asking people's temps, then reporting yours in celsius, while someone else reports theirs in fahrenheit, and then neither of you understanding why they're different. So I explained the conversion between the two.

Bandwidth is made up and agreed upon anyway.

Yes, we do all get them.
We don't all turn around and act like dicks though, referring to people in a condescending way.

Dammit KB, stop being so smart and using them highfalutin techno words.

I'm going to go watch some Khan Academy vids now. I'll be back, though; just you wait.

I've seen better, maybe I could do better rebooting my cable modem and router. But I couldn't be bothered, this is fine for what I do.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.
