Generally watching that ends up being productive, in a small way. At least, that's what I've heard. |

While I do believe the model is moving to streaming, I don't believe it will happen in the next 2-3 years. It's the same problem as if every one were to suddenly buy an electric car overnight and plug them in to charge- the system doesn't have the capacity. Not to mention that many are moving to the mobile model, and the Verizons and AT&Ts of the world can't handle the amount of data. There are a lot of problems to solve, and infrastructure to add. Not to mention issues such as Comcast blocking access. |

I wonder how many patents Netflix has covering the streaming of video model. If they have good patent coverage I'll wager that Google is after the company. At this time Apple appears to be declaring war on anyone it can. Prime example is their attack on Samsung, and the persuasion of the EU to temporarily stop all sales of the Galaxy tablet. Microsoft formed a patent holding company, CPTN Holdings, and Apple now looks to be a member of this company (an unlikely alliance?). Google's purchase of Motorola mobility looks to be less about the acquisition of a hardware company, and more about adding to the patent portfolio - the only way it can stave off an attack by Apple is to have a larger arsenal. Which brings me back to Netflix - do they have a patent portfolio? On a separate note, the next version of Internet Explorer known as Metro, destined for Windows 8, contains no support for Adobe Flash.......just like Apple's competing product. An unlikely alliance? |

I know I'm way off on major money pushing the streaming concept. Oh - this just in: Amazon announced a huge collab with Fox Studios today, giving Prime subscribers access to Fox TV shows and movies (like, all of them). Netflix followed that up with an announcement of their own - a huge collab with Dreamworks (exclusivity), this on the heels of their huge Discovery collab announcement. Yeah - they're definitely in huge trouble, as is content streaming. Yes, Silverlight is sunsetting - at about the same time Flash does (for whatever that's worth). Checking out the Win8 SDK right now, and their new development platform for the web is pretty slick. I may have to convert. Their new web environment will be heavy on HTML5 and CSS3. For once, IE will be at the front of the curve. AL: Silverlight is MS's answer to Flash. It's a great product actually, just not timed very well, since it will phase out with focus on HTML5s built-in ability to easily handle embedded video and render graphical content. |

Will there be a new video compression used with HTML5, or will we just be seeing wmv, mpeg and whatever Apples format is? Wonder who will convert all of YouTube - isn't that all in Flash? |

Even Flash can if self be a wrapper for some one else's compression. Pretty sure HTML5 can handle older compressions. YouTube converted tons of stuff to non-Flash to cater to iPhone/iPad; it is just a matter of time until they finished converting everything. I have yet to run into any YouTube content that I cannot view on iPad/iPhone touch ... may be they have finished converting everything. |

1hp: HTML5 utilizes many movie formats, it's not in itself a new format. So having it doesn't remove the need/use for Flash, and doesn't do away with any video formats. In fact, because every major browser implements HTML5 differently, if I want to embed video in HTML5 today, I need several copies of each video I want to embed, in different formats (I'm assuming when you said "compression" you were referring to separate codecs?). The real power of HTML5 however, comes in its ability to render graphics. Imagine gaming where your GPU is doing hardly any graphics rendering - in other words, devices without dedicated GPUs like mobile devices, netbooks, and the like, would be able to get impressive fps on games, animations, anything graphical, and the browser is handling all of it. Flash isn't going anywhere right away. Flash has roughly 99.9% market penetration (I think 95% technically), and HTML5s biggest move right now isn't to try to go against flash, but to try to give another platform independent method of delivering similar content. The flash player I use on our work website for streaming audio just came out with HTML5 support. So that's a backup to flash, if I want to support HTML5 capable browsers/devices, and provide a "lean" version of the player. My go-to is still the flash skin however, as it will for the foreseeable future be the more reliable of the two. |

At least Pepsi was able to capitalize off the opportunity New Coke provided. Block buster did nothing with their chance. But yeah, both companies make a big grandiose sweeping change, causing enough uproar over something fairly silly in order to pull off the more substantial profit making change. In Coke's case it was HFC, and with "Quikster" it was a 60% price increase. Stop and think about that, a 60% price increase is going to go right past, yet a BoA annual charge of $5.00 for ATM use causes near riots. |

If netflix was increasing prices to deliver your DVDs to you that would probably cause near riots as well. As it is, they're physically sending you a product via the USPS (rather than telling the ATM to dispense some funds it already has inside of it), and have some material cost in doing so. You're right, Blockbuster missed an opportunity. It's one they already missed a decade ago though, when they let Netflix step in and do what they should've had the foresight to see was the future. |

Interesting, I got that note in my email this morning with one difference - it was signed "respectfully, the Netflix team" rather than the CEO-personalized "Thank you. Reed" as in the link. I noted the signature in this morning's email because it struck me that the previous note about how they were sorry for the ham-handed price increase (which they, of course, word as "price change") was personalized from Reed. It was an obvious attempt to make the apology mean something, to assuage an annoyed customer base. I bet there was some interesting discussion about how to sign this one. If it had been sent again by the CEO as a personalized note, he starts to sound like even more of a buffoon than he admitted to being last time. So they probably de-personalized it at the last minute, copying Reed's blog entry verbatim but not attributing it directly to him. |

Except for the ever increasing costs of ATM maintenance, repair, and replacement. I am by no means a BoA fan, there are many things they've done in the past that have me foaming at the mouth. A $5 ANNUAL (I love how all the reports have tried to make it sound like it's $5.00 per usage) fee is pretty reasonable in the grand scheme of things. |
