Every BluRay I've purchased in the last year has had three versions - BR, DVD, and digital copy. I have to look to find ones that contain only the BR disc.

I need to start shopping where you do then. I buy between 7 and 21 copies of every title that comes out, and the majority of them only have a blue ray disc in it.

Why wouldn't they count them as both a package BR, and package DVD sale, since it is both?

I would imagine that would be because by "package" they're referring to the little plastic box they come packaged in. But I really don't know, though I seriously doubt if everyone but me is getting both versions in one box that they would fudge the numbers to that level. It would make their entire data useless. I can't see them doing that on purpose, can you?

Remember something, there's a whole different world outside of some of the upscale technohip communities that many of us are part of. There are still large areas of the country where the idea of downloading a movie or streaming would be absurd because of how slow the connection speeds are. Eventually DVD's will go the way of the dinosaur, but not for another 7-10 years I think.

Already addressed this - I don't think it will take anywhere close to a decade to bring broadband connections to 95% of the population.

Of the % of people who don't have access to broadband, many can find provision with WISPs or Satellite providers now (though they may be unaware), and within 5 years technologies like WiMax and Power-Line will help make the number of people without access very small.
LEO and MEO satellite systems in fact, don't even have the latency typically associated with satellite systems, and provide a very viable solution to most folks who can see the southern sky.

Australie is currently in the midst of a project which will roll fiber out to over 90% of their population.

I don't think it will be long before broadband Internet is seen as a necessity, and will be available to everyone regardless of location on the globe.
It's not even the number of people that have broadband, even most people with broadband aren't streaming or downloading movies. Most of the population over the age of 45 is uncomfortable with computers and the technology necessary for downloading movies, or even own the devices to do so. I just finally convinced my father to get a computer and email last year... He's not about to start streaming movies. Heck, I hardly ever stream movies, and am far more likely to stop by Redbox than I am to cue up VOD or Netflix. I sit around talking with my friends about movies, when I mention a movie they are typically much more likely to mention putting it into their queu than they are to stream it.

Again, this will all change. People will adapt to the new technology and others older generations will die off, but it's not going to be happening all too soon.
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

Yes - it is happening pretty soon.
There's a lot of money right now that will insure that it does, whether people want to or not.
The public doesn't decide these things, these things happen whether they want it or not.
Do you know why we used to purchase VHS rather than Betamax tapes? Do you know why you get a BluRay and not an HDDVD today?

Netflix customers stream a lot - between Q3 2008 and Q3 2009 number of netflix subscribers who actually streamed content more than doubled. That's a pretty healthy rise. In 2009 that number was over 42% - two years later I'm willing to bet that the majority (vast majority) of Netflix customers stream content.

Don't worry, DVDs won't disappear.
They'll just be obsolete.

I'm amazed that you'd rather drive to a redbox than push a button on your remote and stream VOD.
My laziness is precisely why I stream everything. I can't imagine sending/receiving physical DVDs (I quit netflix 8 years ago because even then sending/receiving DVDs was way too much for me).

Now let me tell you how I money in the video business....... :D

My store has a tanning salon. Good money maker. It has a porn room. HUGE money maker, and ...
Larry, you make money peddling pornography?
I thought you were a Christian.
Wow!
Talk about moral relativism and liberal interpretations of the Bible.

Even I, an off the map liberal atheist homo, would never consider selling pornography.

Kenny, I'm a heathen, saved by the grace of God. Given where I see some people taking the Christian church, I'm not sure how much longer I will be willing to be associated with it, however. So I may have to find a new label.

I do. You're the one with the misconception that being a Christian means you have to be perfect, not me. You're confusing two things - sinning, and knowing what sin is. I never said I didn't sin. You won't hear me condemning anyone for committing a sin. But I know what sin is, and you *will* hear me condemning those who try to redefine it for their own convenience.

Oh, so starting today you'll stop selling pornography?

I know a Catholic guy who says he can do whatever sin he wants as long as he confesses often (as in, before he dies).
He says Catholicism is the only religion where you can get away with this. (his words)

I guess he doesn't know about Larry's church.
Which church do you belong to?
Maybe I'll tell him about it.

Oh, get the freaking chip off your shoulder and stop with the attitude. We all sin, Kenny. But here's the difference between us - I admit mine, you try to justify them and claim they're not. I'm sorry your catholic friend views it as a "get out of jail free" card, but I don't agree with that. My sin is between me and God, not me and you. Your sin is between you and God, not me and you. I don't owe you an explanation regarding how I will deal with the things I've done wrong, nor do you owe me one. But you *do* owe it to yourself to learn what sin *is*, and then turn to God to deal with your eternity.

Now I'm not the least bit interested in you dragging me into one of your religion bashing discussions, so kiss off.

So it's okay for Christians to just keep sinning, knowing they are sinning?

Perhaps another Christian should answer this.

Larry, why don't you just say selling pornography is not a sin?
I suspect that is how you feel deep down in your heart.
I think you have a pretty healthy moral compass. (not sarcasm)

No Kenny, it's not ok. But that doesn't mean we always do what we should do, and it doesn't mean I have to answer to you for it.

I forgot someone bought their remnants. ANyway, it would be good if they revived enough to give Netflix some real competition.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

Watch less TV, watch fewer movies.
Go do something more productive, or go read a book, or go practice piano or something.

So you think reading a book is a more productive activity, do you? You think it's a better expenditure of time? You think practicing piano is as well?

Practicing piano is a worthless activity. (Much more so than watching a movie, which multiple people can do at the same time. All practicinig piano does is annoy the **** out of everyone else in the room so it's actually worse.) Reading is also a solitary activity, one ten times more absurd than movie-watching: you spend hours and hours reading some crappy nonsense some guy made up in his own head. With a piano, all you're doing is banging away at an instrument you'll never play professionally: you spend ten times the effort and you get absolutely nothing tangible out of either!

In terms of time management you have some seriously screwed up priorities.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

You did not read me right. Had I meant to include "reading a book" or "practicing piano" as "something productive," I would have written something like:

"Go do something more productive, like reading a book or practicing piano."

Instead, I used the word "or" to separate "reading a book" and "practicing piano" from "doing something productive."

Why are you telling people to go do something unproductive, and wastes even more time than watching a movie? What the hell kind of advice is that?
