HOLY CARP!!!

The steel is interesting, but I wonder what the locking mechanism is like. |
|
Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool. I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss! - Cecil Lewis | |

I really like that Tanto style blade, but like RR I'd question the Steel. I'm sure the metal's fine - but would the steel used in a building be softer, more forgiving than steel used for a stabbing blade like a Tanto? |

ZOOOOOM!

I highly doubt it. For one, anything used to support WTC has got to be some seriously reinforced, built-to-last material. As to the second point, flexible and more forgiving steel is going to be an issue with beams and girders several meters long, but for a blade measuring only a few inches, the difference is going to be negligible. It's remotely possible that you'd have to sharpen the thing more often, if it were indeed made of softer material, but it's a blade designed primarily to stab people, just how often would anyone plan on using it? |
| I cite irreconcilable differences. | |

Yeah - it might not be an issue, I just know that sword/knife makers are very picky about steel, and specific alloys, so I got to thinking if girder steel in a building might be altogether different, manufactured to have a different set of strengths and weaknesses. |

Steel is steel. It's hardness is determined by how it's processed during the process of manufacturing something with it. I'm sure the metal was melted down, and processed into the proper grade of steel for knife blades. |

Steel isn't steel - it's an alloy. It can be mixed lots of different ways with lots of different elements, which is why it has different grades. I imagine you're right that it doesn't matter - but steel isn't always the same thing. Yes, there are different practices for the processing of steel, such as japanese techniques of folding the metall over and over to increase its strength - but even in its most raw form, the levels of carbon vs. iron can vary pretty greatly, and like I said, various other elements can be added in as well, depending on the characteristics (grade) needed. Sorry - reading that it looks like I'm being confrontational - I don't mean to be. I was just pointing out that steel isn't some elemental thing, it's a mixture of things, and as such is pretty variable - that's all I meant, so don't take the above as adversarial. |

Yes, you're correct. But that was my point, even though I didn't word it all that well. |

I better edit, lest people think that I'm claiming steel is an "allow!" |

As a symbol, the choice of WTC steel is entirely appropriate. It's just not what you'd choose for a weapon that was intended to be used. For that purpose, there are better steels. Big Al |
