HOLY CARP!!!

Feds: Zawahiri Launched Al Qaeda Terror Plot for 9/11 Anniversary This threat, coupled with information obtained when Bin Laden was killed that they wanted to hit the US around the time of the 9/11 anniversary and kill as many Americans as possible, got me to thinking. Kill a large number of Americans on 9/11, which is a Sunday. Now where would you be able to find a large number of Americans gathered together on a Sunday afternoon in September? I wouldn't want to be sitting in any NFL stadium this weekend. Just sayin'. |

I see you thought of that too... I don't know what kind of security they have at football games. Barricades? Spectator searches? But I would imagine driving a truck bomb into the building would be a disaster. We've all seen what it can do to a building in OKC. Let's hope Big Sis takes time out from groping little 6 year old girls to think about it too. |

An open air stadium is a completely different affair, though. Conventional explosives might kill or injure up to a dozen or so people. To really be a threat it would either need to be a small nuke, or have radiological/chemical/biological agents in it. A dirty bomb iotw. |

So you don't think a truck bomb, like the one used in OKC could crumble a section of a stadium, where thousands of people are sitting? |

Just remember.... there was no attack on US soil under Bush's watch. Obie has a lot riding, politically, on this being a quiet weekend. |

Yup - definitely the most "risky" day in the last 10 years coming up... LD, interesting point about the DC/NY game. I would imagine security will be a lot higher than when I was at FedEx field a few weeks ago for the Steelers/Skins game when they barely searched me (although they did look inside my GF's purse). |

Lookin' for pocket nukes, no doubt. But seriously. I've never been to an NFL game, so I haven't a clue what kind of security there is there. Could an unarmed ticket taker/ security person stop a truck barreling full speed toward the stadium? |

No, but they can ruin the experience for a lot of people. If they really upset enough people they can make the jump to TSA. |

IT or Dewey can answer this question better than I can, but generally I don't really think so. Part of what made the Oklahoma bombing so effective was the fact that the truck bomb was underground. As a result, 60-70% of the force of the explosion was directed against supports for the building. An outdoor explosion against a stadium support? Most of the energy is lost. Plus it would be next to impossible for the truck to get close enough to really have any impact. There are multiple barriers. Now, that's conventional explosives I'm speaking of. As for Copper's suggestion of fire, again, the materials of construction are so flame resistant, that it would take unconventional materials to truly create a hazard to more that a few people in the local immediate area. |

Actually, the truck holding the bomb in OKC was parked out in front of the Murrah Building. It peeled off the whole front of it and did damage to other buildings taht is still being found miles from the site. |

You're right. My mistake. I mixed it up with the first WTC attempt. I still don't see it as having the same kind of affect due to the construction and architectural differences between a stadium and an office building. However, it really wouldn't take many deaths or damage to incite terror into the general populace. |

Obviously, I'm no an expert on American history, but I seem to think that 9-11 occurred under Bush's watch, or is that considered to be Clinton's fault since his seat was still a bit warm and sticky? |

I believe he meant post-9/11. At least that is how I understood it. If there had never been a 9/11 the statement would come off as rather nonsensical. |

Actually, there were several attacks since 9-11. We tend to forget because they weren't successful. Shoe bomber, underwear bomber, Times Square to name three. Does anyone else remember this movie? ![]() If most stadiums are like the ones where I live, they've added heavy planters and pylons to make it difficult to get a vehicle close to the stadium and, particularly, the major structural elements. Traffic control may be extended a little further away, too, for games this weekend. It's difficult to know what other precautions may be in place that are non-obvious. I wouldn't make any suspicious moves too close to possible targets. Someone might shoot first and ask questions later. Big Al |
