All of San Diego county is without power, and parts of southern Orange county. Arizona transmission line failed, triggering a complete SDG&E outage. Extends into Baja California too. Traffic was a nightmare with no traffic lights working. Not to mention those who don't stop at traffic lights that are not working! :veryangry:

Sorry to hear that, hope you all stay safe.
You need serious public works projects to upgrade the old power grid.

So sorry. California legislature just gave the money to illegal aliens to go to school.

Get federal money to pay for it.
For decades, blue states like California have given more tax money to the federal government than they get back. If California has to take more money from the federal government once in a while to upgrade its aging power grid, so be it.

It's not only California, but also Arizona. After all, 1hp is in this predicament because an Arizona transmission failed. It's "interstate" grid. Today, power may flow from Arizona to California. Some day, it may be the other way round. Much like the Interstate highways, use of federal money for interstate power grid is entirely appropriate.

We pay federal fuel tax on every gallon of gas we buy. 17 cents, I think. Which pays for the interstate highway system. I have no problem with that. Every state in this country has a interstate highway in it.

When it comes to interstate power transmission lines, some power company owns those lines. Let that power company upgrade those lines and pass the cost to their customers. I'm not interested in paying to fix the power grid out west. I pay for that here in Virginia. Our power company actually has a line item charge on the monthly bill for *power transmission*, which covers the building and maintenance of the transmission lines.

Power was restored here in San Diego overnight. Mine came back on around 12:30. This morning the news said all of the county is almost back to normal. It's been reported that a single maintenance worker working in Arizona at a Yuma station made some (stupid) mistake which led to the cascading tripping of power throughout the grid. There are bound to be a lot of questions of how one worker (!) could mess up and cause such an event. Also, the whole issue of grid interconnectivity and power-sharing is going to be re-visited, as it has been many times in the past. Plenty of material for the bloviating politicians!

Have to say that, apart from the drivers not stopping at non working traffic lights, the whole thing was a refreshing change. We should do it once or twice a month! Kids actually went outside to play with the neighbour kids. I spent the evening on my deck with my wife and daughter, and a neighbour. Bar b cued dinner, and sat talking into the night by oil lamp, while making sure the beer and wine was consumed before the fridge got too warm. All in all, a most pleasant evening.

And frankly, I think that Arizona utility worker was one of those extremist Tea Party types who didn't want us to listen to Obama's speech. :sombrero:
