ZOOOOOM!
You guys heard about this?

http://www.kindlesingle.net/

Here's the jist:
Amazon's getting into self-ePublishing. (That's an atrocious mess of prefixes but you know what I mean.) Basically, if you want to publish some original creative material that spans somewhere between a magazine article and a full-length novel, you can submit your work through this platform, somewhat akin to making your own Apple apps.

I'm really torn about this, and could talk about it from all kinds of angles. (In fact I wrote about three long posts originally, but deleted them all because I figured nobody would read it, which ties in perfectly with one of my major points. Oh well.)

I haven't made up my mind about it yet. Would be interested to hear what y'all had to say about it.

Without doing lots of research, I'd say that if you have works that fit the guideline or if writing stories/articles/whatever of that length appeal to you, then it seems like the kindlesingles could be a way to get some experience and exposure.

Oh man - this is not at all what I thought this thread was going to be about!
"I realize you want him to touch you all over and give you babies, but his handling of the PR side really did screw the pooch." - Ivory Thumper
"He said sleepily: "Don't worry mom, my dick is like hot logs in the morning." - Apple

I'd say that generally speaking, this sort of publication history wouldn't be taken nearly as seriously as those more traditional. And there's good reason for that. The physical act of "publishing" used to be labor and money-intensive. Publishers weren't willing to take a chance on just anything that came their way, there was a built-in quality assurance system in place.

On the other side of the coin, I'd make the argument that this system's pretty broken these days. With only a handful of companies publishing 80 percent of the material available in the U.S., the QA has shifted from ensuring quality to going with the sure thing. Nobody's looking for the next Angela's Ashes or Metamorphosis, they're looking for another Bristol Palin bio. I think there's something seriously wrong with that.

But with this kind of self-publishing, you still run into the problem of lowering the bar. Advances in technology have only made it possible for more people to voice their opinion, nevermind what that opinion might be or the manner in which it is distributed. Blogs make it easier to express yourself, but you're not bound to find quality material out there.

So I dunno, I'm torn.
