I know the stuff belongs to his son, but it is a crime to sell off that stuff. If he doesn't want it any more, he should donate it to a museum. |

It's pretty well known that Stalin was a movie FANATIC! He couldn't get enough of the stuff. Towards the end, it was so over the top, that all pretenses of meetings with his officials ended, and he just had them over for dinners and film festivals. He placed himself as the end all be all of Soviet Film, and went so far as even trying to write film scores. He was particularly in love with Hollywood films, and one of his favorite genres was the western. He reportedly saw himself being akin to "the Sherrif". At the same time, you had this rough and tumble actor that came to be the embodiment of Westerns. Tough, strong, gritty, and with a strong sense of honor. This guy was the epitome of how Stalin saw himself. Just one problem. John Wayne was staunchly anti-communist. He was a huge supporter of the House Un-American Activities Committee, and was supposedly responsible for the black listing of many actors/directors/writers with communist ties. This incensed Stalin to no end and he ordered Wayne's assassination. Apparantly there's even released Soviet documents verifying this. The more questionable account is the story of what happened in the attempt. Supposedly, two KGB agents were sent to the US and were posing as FBI agents that wanted to meet The Duke. The real FBI agents got wind of this and set a trap with Wayne. Supposedly Wayne and a stuntman friend were in Wayne's office conspicuously rehearsing. When the KGB agents broke into the office, FBI agents swarmed in from other rooms and quickly subdued the two. Then the FBI agents, along with Wayne and the stuntman, drove them out to a beach, forced the two to kneel, and Wayne and the stuntmen drew pistols and fired. The pistols were loaded with blanks. Then Wayne, looking at the two KGB agents (that had soiled themselves) drawled something to the effect of letting them go as these two couldn't hurt anybody (or something to that effect). The two agents supposedly realized that they would be killed by Stalin if they returned to the Soviet Union hving failed in their mission, so they asked for asylum and defected. That's the story, anyway. The stuff about Stalin and his obsession with movies and the order to assassinate Wayne are supposed to be verifiable and demonstrable. The rest was put out there by some biographer about 10 years ago. The biographer (I think his name is Munn?), once was a pretty credible biographer, but I think they've discovered that much of his stuff is pure baloney, so take it for what it's worth. |

Firing blanks at people at short range is not safe. Any stunt man would know that. |

"Any man who would make an X rated movie should be forced to take his daughter to see it". - John Wayne There is a line we cross when we go from "I will believe it when I see it" to "I will see it when I believe it". Henry II: I marvel at you after all these years. Still like a democratic drawbridge: going down for everybody. Eleanor: At my age there's not much traffic anymore. From The Lion in Winter. | |

I figured as such as well. As I pointed out, the second part of the story sounds very suspicious. Of course, they don't say that they aimed directly at them so who knows. |
