Good article. Even if one does not agree with the Tea Party's goals, it should surely be encouraging that the voice of the people can still be heard in Washington. |

Disagree with that assessment. The voice of some people have been heard, but the voices of the majority who think that "the rich" should pay more taxes and the voices of the majority who think that various farm and oil subsidies should be cut ... their voices have been ignored. This is another case of extreme, vocal minority "winning" the day by being extreme and vocal. |

The mistake you make is in thinking that your view is the view of the majority. It is not. The extreme, vocal minority is and always has been, you leftwing nutjobs. |

It is well-known that in MAD (mutually assured destruction) scenarios it is a strategic advantage if your opponent thinks you are crazy. I wonder whether the outcome of the debt limit debate is an instance of this rule. |

I completely agree. Ignore the Tea Party at your peril. The more the left wing pundits laugh at, and deride them, the stronger they get. |

Well, putting epithets like 'crazy' aside (just for now, don't worry ), its clear that the Dems had a strategic disadvantage going into this particular game of chicken since there were many on the other side who didn't (and still don't) believe that having the cars crash would be a bad thing. So I think the answer to your question is a qualified yes. Qualified since those who didn't consider failure to raise the debt ceiling or even default to be an issue were only a minority of the GOP, albeit a vocal and reasonably powerful one. |

Oh, "crazy" is in this context not necessarily a bad thing. It just means: Making your opponent believe that you will not shy away from what your opponent considers to be the catastrophic case. It may very well be the case that you would shy away from it, but the only thing that counts is whether your opponent believes you would not :gametheory: |
